pain pump trial overdose

I was given an overdose of morphine during my pain pump trial. Apparently the test pump was set for the wrong drug concentration being used, it was set to give 100 times the required dose. When they started it I passed out and my breathing stopped, luckily my heart never quit but my oxygen level did drop below 70. They stopped the trial and administered a recovery drug to bring me back. So now I'm left with a chronic headache but no one seems to know for sure whats causing it. Has anybody else suffered a morphine overdose like this and do you have a chronic headache from it?

  • No , thankfully, but RancherBill, thank goodness that you survived! How on earth did they manage to use the wrong concentration of morphine in the pump????? Someone should have checked and double checked and triple checked the concentration strength before they ever came close to putting that in the pump, and therefore into you!!!! I hope that you are going to find out who did not do their job, starting with the doctors who injected the medications, the pharmacists who dispensed it and whoever else was involved.
My goodness, you could have died! This should never have happened.
The headache is probably caused by the low concentration of oxygen in your system. How is it now? I recently have had pneumonia and my pulse ox's have been in the 70's as well, and I've had a headache and a half since they have been that low.
Please make sure that the doctors keep an eye on that , you could have more problems if you don't.
And, please, make sure that someone is held responsible for what happened to you.
  • They really dropped the ball with you Rancher Bill. I can't believe this happened and I'm sorry you had to go through that. I'm so glad you're okay.

I had my morphine pump trial but it was a single injection, and I stayed in the hospital for observation 1 day. I prefer that one over wearing an outer unit any day because you can't shower the whole time. I think they injected just 1 cc of morphine.

Does your head hurt worse when you pick it up? Sandi's solution makes a whole lot of sense. I just want to make sure you don't have a spinal headache from leaking spinal fluid. We run the risk of getting that whenever we have invasive spinal procedures done. I had one for 2 weeks because of a stimulator trial long ago. Do you have any nausea, vomiting, dizzyness, impaired hearing, and severe headache when you pick up your head? If so, go to the ER and notify your doctor ASAP. It's a very serious condition.

Anyway, what are you planning to do next? Would you try the single injection trial like I did? I hope you get to feeling better soon, take care
  • I'm so glad to hear you are OK also. What a mess.

I hope they identify and add some better security procedures to stop whatever went wrong that caused this! Gives me the creeps when I hear about this stuff.

I hope you are feeling better soon. I would be calling to find out if you have a possible sinal headache. They can treat that and stop it.

Let us know how things go. Did you even get time to see if it was going to help, or was the O/D to quick? I sure hope this all works out and you get some relief in both the Headache and the CP.
  • I am considering a pain pump after 3 years of chronic pain. I had my first back surgery when I was 20 years old, that was 30 years ago. 45 days in the Methodist Hospital, 2 surgeries from Dr. Herrington, 9 mos in a body cast and I was the bionic man after 3-5 years. I have lived a good life with managable pain. The Silva Mind Control Method got me through 25 years without narcotics. Mororcycles, horses, dune buggys, hunt & fish, no problem. In Jan of 07 I was in a car accident that completely wiped out my pain-free days. After a failed back surgery to remove 4 discs and plate the spine, I have nothing but pain. It was 60% controled with Percoset, Soma & Promethazine. 2 years after surgery my orthopedic surgeon threw in the towel and sent me to the Pain Management "Guru". Life has gotten worse since then. This is what the Guru suggests to manage my pain. I am not convinced. I am going to try another orthopedic guy before I have the pump placed.
  • Other than research, shopping, chat rooms & porn, I have had little use for the internet. As I find comfort from reading others experiences that I can relate to, I also realize that the "hook up" potential is very low! If none of us are "hip flexible" or "rapid movement" friendly, the prospects for meeting companionship are bleek.

JUST KIDDING!!! Lighten up, pop some meds and post a sultry reply.
