i'm looking for someone who can give me some hope that post op leg pain will end. my husband has been struggling for almost a year with this. he has been off work for 6 months now trying to heal his back - most of this time was spent in bed with acute pain. he had a microdiscectomy on his l5/s1 in june after an mri showed a severely herniated disc and he had such decreased mobility and did not respond to any conventional treatments (physio, painkillers, acupuncture, cordosone injection). following the surgery, he was again in acute pain and on a whole whack of pain killers. the surgeon said this was due to the fact that the nucleus had started to retract into the disc, but was pulling the nerve with it. he had to 'free' the nerve up when he went in and it was consequently irritated. he said it would be about 4 weeks of acute pain (and he was right) and then things would calm down and the nerve should heal up. he has since weened off the pain medication and has regained some mobility, but is still not able to sit for any real length of time and still has persistent leg pain. it's been 2 months of this and his recovery seems to have plateaued with no improvement at all.
being as he's a pilot, he will not be able to return to work until he is able to sit for extended periods of time. this is so disheartening and frustrating. he has worked for 11 years to land a job with an airline and 4 months into his dream job, he was bedridden with back, leg and sciatic pain. he's desperate to get back to work and is terrified that his dreams of being an airline pilot may be coming to an end. i'm heartbroken for him, but also desperate to get him back to work as i'm currently off work (on mat leave) with a newborn son and 3 year old daughter. it's hard not to lose hope when it seems like anyone we've read about who had persistent pain post op leg pain never actually got better. none of his doctors or physios have really been able to give him any answers, except to say that he shouldn't still be having leg pain. he's on a waiting list for another mri again, but that won't be for another 4-6 weeks.
has anyone gone through something similar and actually recovered fully? neither of us want to believe that this will be his permanent state of health.
