Soma... Max dosage?

I was told by my Dr that the Max allowed prescribed dosage to Soma is 90x350mgs per mo? I know of all the muscle relaxers I have tried that Soma works the best and on bad days I need to take 2 at a time to make them work. So I have asked for more then a 90 pill per month supply and was told that is the max per mo supply.

is it true?

  • sorry I can't answer, but please be thrilled you get Soma. So many clinics are no longer prescribing it for it's high addiction potential. I LOVED Soma and it was the only one that worked as well. I took Soma INSTEAD of BT meds and they still took it away from all patients. I'm now taking Robaxin and it is okay.

Keep an eye out for your clinic to discontinue. It is spreading around the country.

    Enjoy it while you can!

  • Technically your body should be able to handle more than you are prescribed, but as Cheri mentioned this drug has been all but abandoned due to addiction potential, typically when co-administered with opiates (oxy in your case). The soma has a deceptive action in that you can typically FEEL it for the first hour or two, it fades a bit, and then you think it is gone.. But it stays in your system for quite a while, and it stays effective. For this reason, 3 a day is more than sufficient. Also, it can increase the levels in your bloodstream of your Oxycodone, which lends to the addictive qualities as well as dangerous potential.

From my experience, 4 a day was too much, and 3 a day is just right. (I'm a lean 190lbs) My PM will only give me 2 a day now (60) and I practically had to hypnotize my doc to get it. My mistake for deciding to try all of the other relaxers and then switch back..

I have to agree that you are 'lucky' getting 90. Please don't take two at a time unless approved by your doctor; it will only make it harder to stick to the 3 a day, and you might be running out well before the end of the month. I would much rather have 3 soma left on the day of my refill, than to be out for a week beforehand!

    Good luck!

  • I was actually searching because I wondered what the recommended max per day is for Soma. I take 4 soma per say. They are 350 mg. Many days thats enough but Lately I've found myelf wondering if my doctor would prescribed 5 a day. Is it safe to take every 4 hours or is that just not enough time in between. Like so many people i have major pain issues. My doc prescribes me immiediate release morphine - max of 60 mg a day. Until a month ago I was on 120 mg of immiediate release Morphine and 180 mg time released morphine. I also take Relafin daily and Lorazapem, not to mention blood pressure meds. I always have felt the Soma's gave me the most relief. morphine helped but not much and the itching I get from the Morphine leaves me with little desire to take any more then I absolutely have too. Having cut back on the Morphine I had considered asking my dcotor for a 5th Soma a day. Reading the replies here I'm thinking I'm lucky to be getting 4 and need to find another method of making my pain level tolerable
  • The max dosage of Soma is what your doctor prescribes for you. If you continue to take two at a time, you are going to run short. You say that you "need to take two now for them to be effective" , so you are already experiencing some of the tolerance issues that your doctor is concerned about. Soma is an addictive medication, although it is also one of the best muscle relaxers in my opinion, however you really need to decide if you want to challenge your doctor into trying to get him to prescribe more than he is comfortable with, and continue to take more than you are supposed to at one time or if you want to keep the pain management that you currently have.
If your doctor knew that you were taking two at a time without his consent, he would most probably cut you off without a second thought. And he also would probably discontinue any other opiate type med that he is prescribing. Part of the agreement that we make with our PM doctors is that we will follow their prescribing directions, and that means that we don't adjust our own dosages.
I don't mean to be rude, but doing what you are doing is a dangerous game, not only for yourself but for any other patients that your doctor sees. Having patients who self dose makes them think twice about how they will treat the next patient.
