Evening y'all! Hey, just a quick question here. This coming Monday, I have to go to Memphis for my first month post-op check up for my L5S1 fusion. Physically, I feel pretty well, good days and bad days taken into account. I just wonder what kind of things they're going to look at. Is one month out to early to see if there's bone fusion taking place? I'm just curious about it.

Peace & Love

  • They will probably take x-rays and look for signs that the bone has begun to fuse. I had a good start on fusion at my one-month check-up. It often doesn't start off that well for folks, so don't be too disappointed if you don't have good signs of fusion yet. Good to hear that you're doing pretty well.

    3 level spinal fusion, L3/4, L4/5, L5/S1, November 2008. Stiff, but I can walk.
  • Thanks, Linda for your quick response. I guess it's kinda what I was really expecting anyhow, but I'm getting a little antsy now that the check up time draws neigh. I can't believe it's been almost a month. For Pete's sake, time sure flys by when you're flat on your back! Good thing I guess.

    Thanks again,
  • Aaron,

I have an appt next week also and am really nervous about it. I had the same thing done as you, and have good days and bad days...I also had a TLIF put in as well... (rods and screws).

Let us know how your appt goes and then maybe I can understand what to expect...

    Good Luck!

  • My doctor did X-rays to check hardware placement and bone graft. He basically just asked me how I was feeling and if I needed anything. He also asked about pain and such. Nothing to be intimidated about.
  • My doctor reviewed the scans that were taken in the hospital and asked to look at my pre-op scans again, which I hadn't brought with me - perhaps you could take yours with you just in case. He asked how I was going, pain levels, medication, mobility, checked the scar and then said to come back in 5 months time with new scans to check fusion.

You'll be fine Aaron, and so will you Matthew.
