I am 23 days post-op from a multiple ACDF with hardware, C 4-6 and decompression of nerve roots and I am now experiencing a new symptom that I'm concerned about. Wondering if anyone else has or had this after their ACDF?
It didn't start until I was 17 days post-op, in fact, it was the day b4 my follow up appt with my surgeon. Everytime I move my head in any direction, there is a "crunching", "grinding" sound and I can sort of feel something moving around a little in the back of my neck. I'm still having pre-existing pain alot more now than B4 the surgery, in my neck and whole shoulder area where there's a continual "stabbing and burning" sensation, like a blow torch is flaming back there.
I discussed all of these issues with the surgeon at my 2 week follow up and he said that the neck and shoulder pain isn;t rare but it may be permanent nerve damage since my nerve roots were compressed for so long. As for the "crunching", he said that is definitely a concern and for me to keep an eye on it and see if it stops or progresses by my next appt in January when they'll take x-rays at that point to see if all is o.k. He mentioned that something may be going on in my facet joint but I have to wait til the x-rays which they will not do until I am at least 2 months post-op.
I'm just sitting back freaking out, worried that something else has developed in my neck as I have DDD, stenosis, spondylothesis, osteoarthritis, and osteophyte complex throughout my cervical, lumbar and thoracic spine. I have 2 discs in the lumbar and thoracic area that are possibly herniated now from being bulged 4 years ago, just as my cervical one's were but then herniated leading me to the ACDF. I can't get an mri to find out until they say my neck is healed enough, then deal with the lower back issues.
I have pain coming from all different areas. I feel like I'm losing it. So tired of all these spine issues. The only comfort I have is knowing that there are all of you here with the same problems and that I am not alone.
Anyone experience any of this and if so, did it get worse or just disappear on it's own? I'd appreciate any advice.
Thanks and good luck to all spiney's!
