upperback neck pain without real explanation

I 31 years old and have had upper back and neck pain for about nine years. I have a sternoclavicular (sc) joint problem it has not been diagnosed as dislocated, but i have had a few serious shoulder injuries from sport and my sc joint is quite obviously protruding superiorly and a little anteriorly. I have finally got round to having a full back checkup (MRI X-ray). The results from the MRI and x-ray showed I had degenerative disc disorder (DDD) lumber 1 and 2 as well as the raised clavicle. the doctor then told me that my lower back DDD was the cause of my upper back and neck pain. I have not found any information relating to lower back DDD and upper back pain so was wondering if that is really possible, or that the doctor just didn't want to look at my sc joint abnormality and found an easy answer with my lower back DDD(in the x-ray the sc joint isn’t visible just the raised clavicle). Any info would be greatly appreciated as i haven't had much help from the doctors I’ve seen. Relating to the DDD I do get some lower back pain and some numbness when cycling but these aren’t a concern compared to the dull chronic pain of my upper back which can make my life very difficult due to the tiredness, headaches, inability to think clearly, and grumpiness which it causes. Please help.

  • Back pain affects the way you carry your body. So what starts as one problem can easily move to another problem. For me it was my feet and ankles. The way I walked to avoid the back pain was horrible on the ankles, not to mention the calves. I actually caused a severe stress fracture in my left foot because of it. I can't say for sure that is what caused your lower back problems but it isn't out of the realm of possibility.
