Need advice for cervical spine pain

I had C 5-6-7 fused in 04 and cervical laminotomy/foraminotomy in 05. 05 surgery was supposed to address neck pain. Pain became much worse - stabbing, aching, burning - upper back/lower neck, mid neck. I understand that I have nerve damage, scar tissue, etc., which contributes to pain. Recently diagnosed with herniated discs at C 3-4 and C 4-5. Now also experiencing pain at base of skull (doc says due to C 3-4 herniation). I have tried opiates, lyrica, gabapentin, cymbalta. They either don't work or have adverse side effects. I am currently taking celebrex and tramadol but they are not very effective. My doctor says I have too much scar tissue to try injections for pain. Two-level disc replacement is recommended. Any advice/suggestions?

  • Sorry to see that you are suffering. What kind of doctor are you working with?

What kind of test did your doctor do to confirm that it is scar tissue?

  • Hi ACDF,

First let me say welcome to spine-health. Have a look around and you will find many who have or are going through the same issues as yourself. It sounds as though you already have a two level fusion and your doctor is recommending adding to more levels in? Or are they going to put ADR's in on top of your fusion. What type of percentages does your surgeon give you regarding pain relief? What are they saying about your ROM being a 4 level fusion? How about trying selective nerve root blocks? How many opinions have you gotten regarding your condition? What type of medications are you currently using?

Just thought I would stop by and welcome you to spine-health and look forward to reading more of your post in the future. Take care.
  • I am working with a neurosurgeon and a pain management specialist (anesthesiologist). The pain management specialist told me it would be too difficult to perform injections for pain, due to scar tissue, but did perform any tests.

I am hoping that someone could recommend medications or treatments to relieve pain.
