Hi all... well here's my current status.
I had a 2-level ALIF at L5/S1 and L4/L5 done on Tuesday, 8/17. I was wheeled into the OR at 7:30am and was in recovery at 2pm. Then to my room at 3pm.
The first 36 hours was very difficult. I had an NG tube in for the first 24 hours. While this was very uncomfortable it helped immensely in keeping the nausea away.
Between 36 and 48 hours I started to feel a bit better and started walking with a walker. On Thursday I started eating again and Friday I was discharged. By Friday, I was walking on my own without a walker.
On Monday, 8/23, I went back to my doctor and he took some x-rays. He said everything went perfect and he was happy with the result so far.
I still have a significant amount of pain. Ironically, almost no pain around the incision in front. Almost all of it is in my back where he put the hardware in and occasionally I still get leg pain. I assume that's normal? I also still have numbness but he did say that would take a few months to go away and even then I'd still be left with a little.
I start physical therapy today (8/26) and I'm hoping that will really accelerate my recovery. I won't push it and I don't want to be impatient but I was really hoping to be further along right now. Am I expecting too much? I measure my pain based on how much pain killers I take and currently I'm still taking a percocet every 3 hours. Is that a lot?
Anyway, I will keep you all posted on my recovery.
Below are some pictures I took at the hospital and my return home. I did convince the physician's assistant to snap a picture of me during surgery so beware of a graphic image:http://www.flickr.com/photos/46698208@N07/4922399232/in/set-72157624661140073/
