2 epiderals...should I bother with 3rd?

I just had my second cotizone epideral on Friday, the first one was a week before that. The doctor did not use xray to guide himself. The first one was not overly painful but I did not receive any relief from it at all. I went for the second one which was extremely painful and could do nothing for two days after due to the pain.Still no relief 3 days later. I am scheduled to have the third one this Friday, but wonder if I should even bother. Has anyone ever had any relief after the third injection even though none after 1st and 2nd, or generally if the first two don't work chances are the third won't? The first one I found to be very high up on my back above where my trouble is ... L4/l5 l5/s1 . I mentioned to doctor and he said that it doesn't have to be right on the spot that it will filter down. The second was somewhat lower and don't know if this is why it was so painful. thanks everyone...hope everyone has a relatively pain free day :)

  • I had all 3 epiderals That didn't help. But that was what Dr order. I did it so he knows I am trying to do what ever it take to be pain free. I ended up with a SCS. It help About 50 % but that better then none.

  • If its not guided by a Fluroscope, I wouldn't do it. I had an epidural administered about 8 years ago in a doctors office in the same manner that you described. He struck a nerve and I never returned to see him again.

    Just my two cents.

  • For my neck I had them. I got no relief, so for me, I didn't have the last (3rd) in the series. Later when another level went, my NS didn't bother having me get them there...

    PCTF C4 - T2, Laminectomies C5, C6 & C7. Severe Palsy left arm/hand.
  • that I am going to go for the third. Thank you all for your input. I am terified to try it again as I seem to still be in more pain now than before the second injection. But I, like painkiller am afraid that the docs won't think that I am trying everything to help with my pain. My ortho told me that I need a one, possibly two level fussion, but he does not do fusion. I am waiting for him to refer me to another surgeon. He wanted me to try the epiderals while waiting. I just don't want to cause anything that could delay being refered.

  • Im suprised that they gave you 2 in just a 2 week span! I just had my 2nd one today, and my Doc specifically stated that they like to wait about 4 weeks between each one to see how the body responds, and if the treament works. As he did it, I also was asked questions about if I could feel the needle poking the nerve running down my leg (my main issue is L5 through S1). Is it possible to get a 2nd opinion?
