I started out as a necky. Well, actually I started out with bad knees, lol. Then my leg, then my neck, my hip and now my lower back. Bad joints/discs/nerves everywhere... I'm positive that my back has got progressively worse, due to inactivity, but what do you do? You go to physio for one thing, which ends up hurting something else more...
If I walk, which I know we're supposed to do as neckies/backies, my leg goes numb and gives out, never mind the pain. If I do light weights to help strengthen my back, it hurts my neck. If I cycle or do eliptical, my knees grind so bad causing more pain, even after having arthroscopies on both (they actually removed all of the cartilage in one, and didn't replace it...) Even aqua therapy causes much pain everywhere. About the only thing I can do is a very few yoga stretches, but is that enough? I feel like a 37 year old trapped in a 90 year old body. My surgeons (ortho and neuro) each have told me that they've seen people in their 80s with better knees/necks than me.
What do we do to keep active, so that our bodies don't weaken to the point that we can't do anything, when the things we're supposed to do cause so much pain?
