Hi. My name is Amanda and I am need of help. I am not sure what to think or do next. I had cervical fusion surgery on c5/c6 in April. I am six months out and in severe pain. Some days it is down the neck and into my left arm and palm of hand and some days it is down the neck and on the right arm all the way to my pinky and ring finger and oddly enough there are days that it is in my neck and head (I get sever migraines about 3 to 4 times a week, put me to bed ones) I am still on pain medication and had to up it this past couple of weeks due to the pain getting so bad. The constant pain is in my neck. The other day I was trying to message it out but there was clicking/movement around the plate so I stopped but I did find that I think that is where the pain is stemming from. I tried to so a chiro but pain got worse and money was an issue so had to stop, I also have been through PT. I am not sure where to go. I have requested a pain management specialist and my surgeon wants me to come in on Tue. of next week. I know from recent xrays at the chiro, I am not fused yet and I don't know if this is the cause of my pain, I carry heavy things a lot and a toddler.
I am a homeschooling mommy to 3 and this is effecting my life greatly! Even my relationship with hubby! I am sorry this is so long, if you have any suggestion as to why or what to do that would be great! From what most people say they are pain free within the first couple of months so I am very concerned about this! Thank you for your help!!

  • Welcome to Spine-Health. You've found a great place for information and support, but unfortunately none of us are qualified to answer your questions.

With that said, I think it's the best thing that you're going back to your surgeon next week. He really is the only one that can tell you what's happening, do the proper testing, and suggest a course of action.

My main concern for you is the heavy lifting. Even after two years I have cervical pain when I lift too much or anything heavy. In my opinion, six months isn't that far out of spine surgery and you've probably done more than you should. I realize you have children and some things can't be helped, but you really have to do your best to let your surgery heal.

I'm sorry I can't help you more and am anxious to hear what your surgeon says. Take care,

PS: Please be careful with chiropractic manipulation with spine problems. Talk to your surgeon about it next week to make sure he approves it.
  • Oh my God! amanda i am also amanda and i also had c5-6 fusion in august and have had SEVERE neck pain ever since i woke up from surgery, and pain down my left arm and at times my right.I also have severe headaches (migraines)that are in the back of my head mostly that seem to shoot thru to the front at times, i read your post and almost cried because i know i am not crazy and i am not makin this up and u are the first person i have read that has had the SAME problems as me. I am sooo sorry u are having these issues but oh my god does it feel good not to be alone in this!I am also back at work and i am being pressured to go off of restrictions and with the pain i am having there is no way i can. I hope u get some answers and if u do please share them with me, u can private message me if u would like, again im sorry this is happenin to u because i know exactly how u feel.
  • I have bad headaches from the back of skull to my temples. My neuro doctor gave me two steroid injections in the base of my skull. It helped for awhile, but as always there is no day w/o pain. Good luch and praying for you. :)
  • Amanda,

While I’m certainly not qualified to diagnose your problems, I can share some similar experiences. I had C5-C7 fused in March 2009. While the operation was a success, I still have a few lingering issues, one of those being muscle spasms. Usually when I get them the pain is mostly between my shoulder blades but sometimes I’ll get shots of pain down my arms and into my pinkies/ring fingers. Once it was bad enough I thought I had screwed up another level and I consulted my pain doc about it. After imaging (mri & xray) didn’t show anything he had me start taking muscle relaxers (valium). Sure enough that took care of it. Definitely talk to your surgeon about it.

This is just my opinion but I am very leery of chiro’s and my neck. They work wonders for some people, even I have gone to them in the past for my lower back. But when it comes to my neck, no way. Too much risk of damaging my spinal cord. I already damaged mine enough and I don’t want to risk anymore. Good Luck!

  • Hi Amanda,

I want to add my welcome to the Spine Health forum. :)

Does your surgeon know that you routinely do heavy lifting? I'm not a medical professional but I would think that lifting heavy objects could significantly compromise the fusion process. If you haven't shared all of this with your surgeon, please do so next week when you see him. He cannot know how to help you unless he knows what you're doing, activity-wise.

My best to you. Let us know what you find out.

  • Amanda,

Good luck on your appointment today, and I hope they find what is causing your pain. My biggest concern for you is your not fused yet and it is part of the problem. Not sure how long ago you had the last set of films, but I am sure they will take a new set of films. Keep us posted on how it goes today.

    Welcome to spine-health.
