Feedback on back treatments

Hi. I dont know how to start this other than to say- I really need advice.
As some may know I have been living with a torn disc for the past 3 years being told there is nothing that can be done for it except therapy.
Two weeks ago I was in so much pain my pcp sent me to the er to get iv meds and ordered an MRI. The MRI was done with the result being this:
1) I have the original tear in L4
2) I have a new tear in L5 with a bulging disc
3) T11 and T12 have Chronic Moderately Advance Degenerative Disc Disease.
I do see a Spine specialist on 11-29.
Here is where I would appreciate ANY FEEDBACK-
I have been doing/done PT, chriopractic thereapy, traction, steroid injections, had a rhizotomy, a discectomy and im at the end of my rope of being told "there is nothing that can be done." I work for a neurological group and one of the docs mentioned checking into surgery because it has been 3 years for one injury and the new injuries need to be looked at. This is really taking a toll on my life as far as my marriage, the pain, and just all around quality of life. When I see the specialist on the 29th, just go straight for surgery? At this point- what else can be done????? Thanks! ~Chele

  • I know how hard it is to be a patient patient. Its good you have an upcoming appointment with a specialist. Only you and your specialist will be able to determine whether surgery is your next step. I wish you the best.

  • You haven't mentioned pain management or medications?
  • You sound like a mirror of me 4 years ago.I searched every Dr for 2 years in alot of pain and finally found a Dr that said that all disc tears dont always show up on MRIs. I had a discogram, and it showed tears in l3=4 l4-5 l5-S-1. I had a two level fusion in Dec 2008. I decided not to go with a three level fusion as my ortho advised me to only do 2 levels as the more levels you do at one time, he said the greater risk of problems. I fused fine, but never got rid of the pain. Now two years later I had another discogram. I now have 2 more levels to fuse, L2-L3 and L3-L-4.
I dont know if I would have had the three level the first time if I would have trouble now. I only know that I fused fine, just ending up doing it again.
I hope that you can find relief from your appointment. Keep us posted.
