Lower Back Pain - Won't Go Away

I am 27 and pretty active (cyclist, rock climbing). About six months, I was working on a bike and bending over a lot. The next day, my bike deteriorated throughout the day, ending with me basically bedridden for 2 weeks (couldn't do anything without a lot of pain in my lower back).

I had no health insurance. This happened to be somewhat before when I was younger and was doing military press in High School. Back was out for a month. Went to Dr., physical therapy, acupuncturist, nothing seemed to work. Except running to relieve it. Ever since then, I've had lower back pain but could generally manage it if I watched myself.

Up until 6 months ago, my back would only be tense and hurt maybe a couple days a month. But nothing too bad...

When I picked up health insurance, the Dr. said: Nothing wrong as far as I can tell. Nothing we can do. Just keep active, it'll be better.

Now, I have constant tension in my lower back. I can't cycle too long... Even running doesn't seem to help. If I overexert it, just a little, the tension turns up a notch, and the pain starts. Can't stand or walk for too long (shopping is deadly), nor can I sit... I work at home and have taken a liking to just using a workout ball so I can move around all day.

Any helpful advice?

I am never very forceful when I go to Dr's office and generally don't know if I should push and try to get an Xray or whatever would be best to see if there is any real problems that can relieve this.




  • It'll get better in 6 months.
    You must keep active.
    You must do regular exercises.
    You are getting old, so get used to it.

    This is what I get, though I am 65.

    Doctors are not too good at this sort of thing as there are no drugs for it. They are not familiar with soft tissue damage, as you have, and as lower back pain is very common they feel safe in saying that it will just get better.
    Well,sometimes it will and sometimes it won't.
    Typical back strain will get better.
    A joint out of place won't, and it will gradually affect the whole body as the muscles battle to do their jobs.
    I'd suggest that you see an expert on the spine, such as a physio. They can very quickly identify any problems-usually just by looking, but they will check every joint thoroughly.
    Often gentle massaging will let the joint go back in. Afterwards, it will all be a bit tender and susceptible to going out again, so you must take it easy as the joints, ligaments and muscles sort themselves out.
    I have had this a lot, and it always remains a weakness, once damaged, but you should still be able to function normally.
    Also consider remedial massage to help get your muscles rid of knots and tightness.
    I tell my doctor about my treatments from physios and remedial massage, how good they have been, and just get a shoulder shrug response.
    Out of their realm.
  • Peter B, I agree with your negative criticism of traditional medicine but there is more hope than the bleak picture that you've painted.

    The problem that MOST doctors miss is ligament laxity. As you know, ligaments hold a joint together and traditional doctors (Ortho, Neuro, etc) FAIL to understand that ligaments can become overtretched and cause pinched nerves and/or local and distal pain. These Dr's are more interested in cutting and drugging than they are in finding the real cause of the pain. People complain about Chiros but IMO these guys do more damage than Chiros do.

    The hope for us, it was true in my case, is that some Sports Med Dr's, Integrative Dr's and some Osteo's are interested in helping patients and are successfully using Prolotherapy injections to strengthen ligaments which then hold the joint (usually the lumbar) together and reduce pain.

    Help is available to people who look hard and don't look for the quick fix like drugs and surgery.

    That is how mine started. Hurt originally in my late 20's lifting heavy object and was bedridden for a week. Then I had good periods (6 months or more) with little or no pain, played golf did whatever. Then, I would over do it and again be laid up for another week and have to start over again. Did that for 15+ years. Then got hurt again where the pain radiating into my left leg was unbearable. Felt like someone had a crowbar prying my hip socket apart. Walking was the only relief. MRI showed several herniated discs (worst 12mm). Surgery really helped me. Post op therapy for a year or more, was also CRUCIAL.
    That being said, I really agree with the others to try every other option first. I think there are many here that are still in pain after surgery, but you don't hear from the ones that were successful because they are not in pain and don't come to the site anymore.
    There are some low back core excercises that also helped me. You can research the web and come up with some that help you.
    Best advise I received was: At the first sign of pain, stop what your doing.
