Chronic Back Pain..... Is it never ending?

So I was in a car accident back in 2007 I had a ruptured disk at L4-L5 and had a Fusion done. Since the surgery I have had numerous amounts of Physical therapy, injection, pain meds, ect. Nothing seems to help!! I am now on Percocet 10/325 2 every 4-6 hrs. The doctor did have me on Buspar to help relax me so I could sleep (did not help at all) and Hydroxazine (sp) she said that would help intesify the effects of the percocet. I have quit taking the two at this point and just continue with the percs. My problem is I can get no relief no matter what I do!! The pain pills are wearing out before it is time for the next dose, I can hardly get out of bed and when I do what ever I do I know Im gonna pay for it later that day or the next day for sure. I am unable to do any of the things that I used to do I have 4 children and I am married to a wonderful understanding man (I thank the good lord everyday for that)We are unable to be intimate any longer cause the pain is so intense in my back. I cannot play with my children all they see me is laying in my bed everyday I hate it!! Is there any other treatment options or medication options that I could discuss with my DR? She is very understanding and we have a great Patient Dr relationship. Her heart breaks for me everytime she sees me in her office! Maybe I should concider a Pain Management Dr? What are your thoughts on this? I have been unable to work since my car accident and SS has denied me several times (I am currently waiting for a hearing). I want my life back I know it will never been the same but just to be able to be out of bed for an entire day would be great!! Also what is good for relaxing and sleeping through the night? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Welcome to Spine Health Tina.

I have finally went to PM after my NS decided he couldn no longer prescribe. It was a good thing- the vicoden & flexerile wasn't working and I was taking a lot of it.

My PM is great. He does the full gamut of treatments and we have been adjusting my meds (trying different meds) to find the right combo for me.

Ask your current doctor if they can recomend some one for you. They are not all the same. I was really worried about the pain contract but I was at the point that I was ready to try anything- the contract is no problem. I see him every 4 weeks and get my meds refilled, discuss my deteriorating spine and options.

    Feel better,

  • I understand you have never had pain relief since your fusion. Have you had another MRI, Discogram, or anything? Have you had a 2nd opinion? Seen anyone besides the Dr that did your surgery?
I had a 2 level fusion in 12/2008. I had disc tears and it was still painfull after the surgery for 2 years. I went through test after test and PT and removed the hardware. I was on major narcotics for pain, and decided I couldnt live this way. Finally went to another Dr, at a Spine Center. The first fusion was healed great, but strain from fusion or something had torn 2 more discs. Had surgery 12/2010 and am 5 weeks out. Havnt felt this good in 4 1/2 years.
What I am trying to say is, dont give up and just take meds, if you can try to seek another opinion or 3 or 7 like I did. I am so glad I didnt quit trying to get to the bottom of it. Good Luck and let me know if I can help in any way. Robin
  • I have tried physical therapy aquatic therapy injection after injection. I was seeing my Ortho doc who did the surgery the problem is he is a good surgeon however his bedside manner is very poor and he is very concieted His theory is "I did the surgery so you should be fine and in no pain". He sent me to a pain specialist who promised he would get me out of pain. After several injections and a trial stimulator he came to the conclusion he has done everything that he can and sent me on my way. I went to my PM she prescribed me different meds til we found one that worked (percocet) However now I have been on this one for so long that it now has lost its longing effect. I am finding my self back in pain before the next dose is able to be taken. I take my meds very carefully as to not become one of those people who abuse their medication by accident just trying to find some relief. I am no sleeping at night and if I do sleep its only for a short time. She prescribed me Buspar to help relax me at bedtime but after taking it 3 times a day I found my self no more relaxed then I was before the meds. She also prescribed me Hydroxazine stating that it would make the percocet more intense however that did not help either. I think you are right in getting some second opinions It sure cant hurt anything I am missing the most important times in my childrens life due to this pain. My marriage suffers my home suffers my children suffer and most of all I am suffering. Thank you for your post. I greatly appreciate it!!
  • When I read your posts, it sounds just as I was. I was unable to much do to severe pain. I started on mild narcotics and was on a very high dose of fentanyl patches and oxycodone 30 mg every 4 hours for break through.
My heart goes out to you, as you mirror me before my last surgery in so many ways. The difference is my surgeon was very concerned when my pain level never went down, and wanted me to go to a spine center to a Dr who was very well known for finding problems with people who couldnt seem to get better. If you want to find out where I went, and the Dr, I will be more than happy to give you his name and such, He was the answer to my prayers, so far.
It was very difficult for my husband to see me like I was every day. I cant imagine having children at home and going through this. If I can help in any way, PM me. Like I said, my heart goes out to you as I know exactly what you are dealing with. Take care, Robin >:D<
  • Thank you Robin for your support it is good to have people to share with who understand what you are going through. I am so glad you are feeling better. I am willing at this point to start trading days of my life for a day of pain free!!! I would love that info I however do not know what state you are in so I dno if it is even gonna help!

Thanks again..... I believe you have to be one of my guardian angels!! ; )
