I am usually more present on the surgery and chronic pain sections, but this recent situation has me looking for more help with those who might have head, neck, and chest related issues. Let me give a little background, then explain what happened.
I am a "rather" healthy 31-year-old male. 190lbs. At 5'11". However, I also have Crohn's Disease, spondyloarthropathy, and mitral valve prolapse. I have had 2 surgeries on mu lower back, both at the L5-S1 location. A microdiscectomy, followed by a fusion. The fusion graft did not take. I have also required 2 ortho surgeries on my left shoulder.
I have occasional nerve twitches in my left eyelid and shoulder. However, after going back to sleep from the restroom at 2am on Sat. I began to hace some heavy, numb feeling in the left side of my face. The numbness then moved down into my neck, back of my head, left shoulder, left arm, hand, and outer torso somewhat. At the same time as this spread, my heart began to pound and race.
I woke my wife, quite certain I was dying and explained the situation to her as I got increasingly colder and more pale. She quickly called 911 and this state contonued until shortly after arriving at the hospital. My heart rate when paramedica arrived was over 200 and my blood pressure was "extremely high". Ther paramedic also said I was cold to the touch.
They gave me baby asprin and 2 doses of nitro. The mild-mod pain in my chest began to subside to more of a weighted feeling. Some minutes in the ER, my pulse began to drop down and testing started. Blood work returned normal, chest x-ray normal, quick head ct also turned out normal.
Several minutes after returning from the CT, another event began. Lasting several minutes and progressing the same with a warm pressing numbness in my face. This time my pulse only reached about 160 and laster only a few minutes. No abnormalities to rythm. This was witnessed entirelt by the nurse and my wife.
Again later in the ER, another event happened, this tike leas severe again, my lying heart rate around only 130. They administered some Ativan and after a littl more monitoring sent me home. Still very frightened by the experience, and very confused. Never had anything like this before.
I'm not depressed or worried. In fact I've had a rather positive attitude larelt considering. So, the idea of a panic attack didn't make sense. And why several times and the weird one-sided numbness?
So, sorry for the long tale, but has anyone had this happen before? Anyone else with spondyloarthritis encounter something similar? I go in to see my primary tomorrow to get to work on a solution, bt the more info I have, the better. I've been through so many health problems at my age I'm getting really tired of it but good with information.
