C-Spine T-Spine - Anterior & Posterior Surgery Plan ???

Hi, friends,

Had my final surgeon assessment for my neuro-compression bi-lateral C-6/7 severe on left, into T-1/2 and thecal sac deformity at C-5/6 = advanced stage of left forearm, hand, fingers nerve damage; all with multiple osteophytes on C-4 thru T-1, most severe large osteophyte mass C-6/7 into T-1/2.

This assessment is #4 because of discrepancies and wide variance of surgery procedures suggested, as well I have complex issues in C-Spine (curvature from scoliosis issues prior to ACDF C-3-6 surgery, plus a abnormal hemi-vertebrae deformity since birth).

Because of these complex issues,NeuroS #1 who did my first C-3-6, is suggesting less invasive mpress 2 levels ACDF minimal invasive ACDF with bone implant at C-6/7 C-7/8. Rational is complex 4-level surgically fused C-3 thru C-6 (no hardware) and to de-compress the levels causing compression of nerve roots coming off of cord.

However, NeuroS #2 and OrthoS are both suggested major stabilization for spinal cord and decompressing, bone wedging more space for nerve roots on 6/7 into T-1/2. Surgery recommended:

Anterior Disc-ectomy removal of osteophytes, wedges of bone implant, plates & screws, C-6-7; Posterior removal of osteophytes, C-5/6, C-6/7, T-1/2, T-2/3, with rods and wires.

I believe the final OrthoS and NeuroS #2 is what is the best plan, hardware for stabilization and fusion, issues of spinal cord beginning, complex junction of fusing C-Spine levels into T-Spine.

I understand the surgery is an "all day procedure" from 9-10 hrs for both anterior & posterior surgery.

I realize this is MAJOR with both procedures, and knowing multiple levels front & back. Having had 3-level ACDF in 1995 I remember it was a slow recovery almost 6 months before I felt better, I was 45 at the time, now I am 62 and am really concerned about the recovery from anterior & posterior + implementation of hardware (my ACDF 16 yrs ago was just gone implant).

Appreciate very much if I could hear from you Warrior Spineys who have had BOTH anterior & posterior surgeries.....give me a sense of what your recovery was like...I am FEARING lots of pain, and a very long & intensely long (year or more???) recovery, major spine and muscle adjustments C-Spine into T-Spine with hardware, my C-Spine surgically fusing, except my top level C-2/3.

Thanks much for any input you can give me - - I have follow-up appt. with OrthoS on April 5th and will be most likely confirming tentative May 2nd surgery date. (eeeeeekkkk!!!!)
