Just started Lyrica

I just started Lyrica (it's been 15 days now). I take 25mg once daily. I am having terrible side effects. I have passed out cold twice..so dizzy and am sick as heck to my stomach. I have 3 kids two of which are very young (2+3) and I feel like I'm losing my mind. And the dr wanted me to go up to 100 mg..whoa! Any thoughts?

  • When do you take it? Usually they have you start at bedtime so you get past the dizzyness.

Considering the age of your kids you need to have a serious discussion with your doctor. This may not be the right thing for you. Have you tried other anti-depressants? One of the others might be a better fit for you.
  • I was originally supposed to take it at bedtime but since I have severe reactions to meds sometimes he wanted me to take it around dinnertime to make sure I'm "ok". I don't see him until the end of April again..but I see my family dr tomorrow. I will ask her what she thinks.
My cardiologist didn't really want me to take the Elavil..and there's another one (sorry I forget the name) because he said that it wasn't "stable" as the Lyrica. He is also happier with me taking the Dliaudid (4mg 3 times a day) instead of the Percocets for the same reasons (heart and blood pressure). As I sit here I am hooked up (one again) to a loop monitor for 2 weeks..they cannot figure out why my bp is so high and my hr is through the roof just at rest so everyone is leary about meds.
I am just concerned about the safety around the babies..I feel like I'm kind of stuck though right now. I take the Lyrica at say 5 and I take ativan (2mg) at bed. I haven't been sleeping well in months and I'm sure that's adding to it. Are all these side effects normal?
I took Tegretol cr for 16 years as a kid for grand mal seizures and I never felt this way. I also tool Paxil for about 5 years for severe anxiety disorder..I gained a ton of weight but didn't experience any of these feelings until the w/d.
I also have the iron issues that they are trying to correct. It is at 9 right now. I just had a scope (upper) done last week and they did do biopsies of the duodeum and small intestine..but he said it looked ok.
I'm just frustrated because everything is going on for me right now and they all point at different things being the cause and nothing is being fixed! haha..*upset laugh*
    Thank you for your response..:)
Do you know of any other meds that I could give a whirl and mention it to my dr..oh wait! The other one was Cymbalta..cardiologist said no tot hat as well. Any others out there?? Thanks!

it can really cause some havoc with your body, especially if you are already taking other medications.

I never had good luck with Lyrica. Started at 75mg 2x day. I was always so tired, the doctor increased me to 150mg 2x day and I could fall asleep standing up an then I noticed that from my knees down I was starting to swell. My toes became sausage toes. Stopped taking Lyrica almost immediately and all the negative side effects disappeared.

Now I am using Neurontin for controlling my nerve pain. Been using it for several years without any real negatives. Started at 300mg daily, went up to 2600mg, and now on a maintenance program of 1200mg 2x day. Only small draw back is that it has seemed to throw off my short term memory.... But then again, that could be aging, or as my wife calls it, selective memory.

With some of the other things going on, have you had recent blood work done? Just to verify any problem areas? Talk to your doctor about how you are feeling on the Lyrica. I know that it is important for you to maintain control when you are taking care of your little ones, but at the same time, you need to be taking care of yourself.

Its always a very tough balance.

  • Hi Ron,
    Thank you :)
Yes, I just had a battery of blood work done (after my nagging to get a basic bloodline.) since I am on all this medication nI am constantly worried about the damage to my insodes I thought it would be a good idea to see where things were at. Well..come to find out my iron is incredibly low..everyhting else checked out ok. My family dr has me on iron pills for now to see if it works to bring the levels up but I'm just very confused about the iron issue. (bad me) but we eat quite a bit of red meat and beans and I know just dietary SHOULD be enough ..but where did all my iron go? I researched quite a bit on this and I was curious about the pariet the one dr put me on..I learned that your small intestine helps you absorb iron but pariet stops the acids in your gut..so therefor it could actually stop the absorbtion of it. I asked my dr and she just dismissed that and said it could be my period. Umm..I'm 35, wouldn't I have had this issue before? Heck, after all the kids were born?
The one neurologist *thinks* I could possibly have a lesion on my cervial spine (not sure if I said that right) but we are awaiting all these haert tests to be completed for me to go ahead and have the mri ( I need a general anesthetic) I have had two scopes..upstairs and downstairs...since Oct 09 I have not been able to have a bowel movement on my own. The gi has mt taking 4 tbsp of milk of magnesia nightly as well as biscodyl. I aslo have signifigant gyn issues. So..I'm just at a loss and I try my darndest to stay postive. It's not just my poor back and neck (and boy oh boy my piriformis is mr angry anymore..owwww)
I try to be positive. I have printed all my meds out and all my procedures and I take these to the drs to expedite the whole thing. Where I live even the specialists are scratching their heads at what happened to me. I never had any back issues..I had a gyn surgery and THIS is what I'm left to live like. :( Problem after problem. I thank my lucky stars that every day I wake up to a loving husband and three great kids but this past 3 weeks has been really tough on me.
I hope my family dr can shed someligth ont his..I just feel awful and spaced out..like a drug addict I guess would feel. Like someone is talking to me and I am "glazed over" and say "huh...were you talking to me"? THAT isn't me...I'm miss molly homemaker! I make my own breads and do everything from scrath..but as of late, it's fishsticks and hot dogs. I afraid to be around the stove when he's not heer to make sure I don't pass out or something. Good grief..what next?
Sorry for the novel guys :)
  • Okay..so I went back to my pm and he wants me to try Neurontin (sp?) 100 mg at first then slowly make my way up to 300 mg. He also did another round of tpi..but this time in my hips and piriformis ..owwww it hurt this time or should I say hurts.
Can anyone tell me the difference in side effects from the Lyrica? I was obviously terribly sensitive to it as it was only 25 mg..the dr couldn't believe how badly I reacted.
    thanks for any advice :)
  • i could not tolerate Lyrica either- i had very similar effects as you describe...YIKES it was horrid! This was about 4? years ago- maybe a little less, but i have managed without this type of med since then. I am having new and excruciating nerve pain after my most recent fusion 1/25/11 and just this past tuesday (4/5) my PM dr added Gabapentin to try / the generic is Neurontin - same exact dosage as you- 100mg at night working up to 300mg... i have been terrified to even take the first dose yet! i take 80mg oxycontin 2xday and 8mg Dilaudid every 4 hours (6 per day) and they work VERY well for me- i was switched to the Dilaudid 2 months ago from Percocet for BT pain- and the difference has been life changing...i am finishing each month with 20-30 extra dilaudid in my bottle which NEVER happened with percocet. I do not EVER have any side effects from these pain meds, no itching, constipation, dizziness or drowsiness or even euphoria...but the Lyrica just knocked me into the dirt... you will have to let me know about the neurontin, and how it works for YOU...i know we are all different but i am really curious... good luck!
ps- i am adding this as an edit- but i saw you also mentioned elavil- i was prescribed that in a very low dose for insomnia and took it ONCE and NEVER again-since then i have been taking Zanaflex 6mg for insomnia as needed- it is a very strong muscle relaxer and it has been great- i actually feel NOTHING when i take it- not really drowsy or sleepy per se, i just fall asleep easier when ordinarily i don't. i am not zonked or unable to wake either... i have had raised BP and HR the last 2 PM visits (march and April) and high pain levels will raise your BP...they were alarmed with mine at the last 2 visits...not sure what is causing it besides pain and stress... :/
