My mom is 69 yr old, never complained of neck pain before surgery. She had episode of weakness on right side, thought it was stroke, but found out on MRI she had 4 discs pressing against her spinal cord. Neuro surgeon didn't really give her much of an option when we asked if surgery was neccessary. NS felt this was something she's had for a long time and would only get worse. He did fusion hardware neck with screws on March 21st. Severe pain after surgery, and this many days out can barely do PT due to pain and spasms. Since surgery, she has had episodes of not being able to feel her arms or torso and says everything goes black (vision) for about 5 seconds. Post op MRI showed swelling and md stated everything is pretty tight back there, but over time should get better. Valium and Flexeril seems to really make her lethargic and she's on Fentanyl patch 50mcg and PRN Norco 10 every 8 hours. They decreased her Norco to this due to lethargy. She has severe spasms and also became confused starting this past Sat. 3-26 and still confused.
She has always had high pain tolerance, never cries, but since surgery she has cried and yelled out in pain. She is in acute rehab facility as of yesterday and doctor there stated the meds she was on from hospital wasn't going to help much, because she felt it was more nerve pain than anything. Can I trust what they are saying? I'm so worried about the vision loss and upset that she had this done when she didn't have any pain to begin with. Any advice would be great!
