I have not been on here for a few years. I had a microdiscectomy in 12/07. It has been great, just a few flare ups but nothing major. About 5 weeks ago I felt that horrible pain again. An MRI was immediately scheduled.I have a large paracentral herniation at my L5-S1. The same disc as before but the other side. My pain was so excruciating for about 4 weeks and surgery was offered on two separate occasions, I declined. I did have an ESI and did do a Medrol pack. I am taking Dilaudid and Flexeril( 2x per day instead of 4)We are expecting a baby, so I wanted to hold out until she is a month old, so that I would be able to help care for her while her mother heals and gets some rest. My Sciatica is now not excruciating all of the time just part. I am doing ok at work. I can still feel tingling and numbness with calf pain. When I walk I have been using a cane to talk the pressure off. Before sitting was my problem but now walking hurts a whole lot.I can only walk or stand for brief periods. I sit down alot to take breaks. By the end of the day I have so many spasms in my leg, that is when it is excruciating. My butt feels like it has a ball in it. My question is: Should I still consider surgery? I have the perfect opportunity to have four weeks of working at home and people will be around because of the baby so there will be plenty of help. I saw the herniation and it is massive. I am not sure it will get better on its own. I need some advice on both sides, pros and cons. I remember surgery but I also remember the lead up to it that lasted 8 months. I don't want to go through surgery again but I don't want to go through that pain for that long again either. Thanks for listening, I am sorry this is so long. Thank you.
