Questions about C1/C2 possible surgery

Well, I am back again. I am recovering from my L5/S1 PLIF. Now it is time to take care of my neck. UGH! I have been dealing with neck pain and headaches for many many years. It has recently gotten quite a bit worse this past year. My headaches have increased in frequency and intensity also.

I finally had xrays taken and found out I have issues with my C1/C2 levels. I am only in the beginning stages of things. I know I have to go through many things before seeing the surgeon. I am just trying to do my homework and research since this neck stuff is all new to me.

My questions are: How long did the surgery take for a single level cervical fusion? How long was the hospital stay? How bad were your symptoms before you agreed to surgery? I have not seen much information about the c1/c2 levels so I figure I am again in the minority of cases. I can't win sometimes.

Thanks for all the help!

  • I'm back again after another chiro visit. Found out a bit more. After I left, he looked at the x-rays closer. Looks like I spondylolithesis in my lower cervical area. I forgot to ask which area. His comment caught me off guard. He thinks this is what is causing the numbness and weakness in my hands.

So I guess another question or asking for opinions.
If I eventually would need surgery to correct both areas, what do you think would be done? Do you think a surgeon would fix each individual area and leave the vertebrae alone between the two areas? OR do you think he would have to fuse all the vetebrae between the 2 areas?

Anyone have any ideas or comments on this?
