media once again prints anti pain pill story

once again the media is printing anti pain med stories. a football player for a college was found dead last week and was tested. what a surprise, 5 different pain meds were found in his body, hydromorphone, morphine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, and oxymorphone. this kid had all five in his blood at the same time. what was sad is that he was supposed to be taking one med for pain from a car accident. his mom said, he was not the type of son who would abuse pain meds. the article was not judgemental per se but printing this story was judgemental in its own right. once again, the media will jump on any story that has to do with someone dying from pain meds, ie remember jeff conway of taxi? he died from pneumonia which was precipitated by an overdose of pain meds. for some reason, the media loves this, people dying form pain meds. no stories about car wrecks due to alcohol abuse, or people dying form lung cancer due to cigarettes, just pain meds. it will never stop i am afraid and this will give the powers to be more ammunition for their anti narcotic, pain med crusade.
I have 4 fusions from L5-3, the latest last May '12 where they fixed my disc that broke. They went through my side this time. I take 40 mg of oxycontin 4x a day and 4 fenatyl lollipops 300 micro gms 4x a day.

  • Jeff conway {hurt his back in the 1970s when doing the song grease lighting he was on pain killers ever since .another victim of the bad back club .he struggled through the film and for the rest of his life he was reliant on strong pain killers but as for as i kn ow he was not an abuser .juts in pain ..like us ..{nice to see you again Jon ..are you on skype?it would be nice to chat to you face to face

  • Once in a while it would be nice to see a story in the media about how pain relievers help people with chronic pain to live a normal or at least semi-normal life. Unfortunately, this just hasn't got the same sensational, attention-grabbing factor as a story about addiction, overdose, and everything else the media puts out there that perpetuates the ignorance and the stigma regarding pain medicine.
  • Jon my news has stories every day about people who drink and drive and kill people. About parents who go to the bar and leave their kids in the car all night. About people who work double shifts and cause car accidents when they fall asleep. And people who don't maintain their cars and kill people because they "need to drive". In NY we hear stories all the time about the 9/11 responders who are dying of toxins they breathed in.

What is wrong with bringing attention to a college student who obviously was using drugs he obtained illegally? Geez the idea is to show that the "good kids" are using drugs too.

The news is looking for rating because that keeps them on the air. But the story has to be of interest to their audience. I'd like to think that the editors are bringing stories that can educate the audience as well as entertain. The fact is that pain medication abuse is at least as big a problem as alcohol in this country. Just because you use your meds responsibly doesn't mean that others do. And pills are oh so much easier to hide than a bottle of scotch.
  • what you say is true but we as pain patients tread on a thin line. any story that shows abuses etc hurts us because it is one more bit of ammunition that in the future could make it harder for us to get meds. yes it is good to let people know about the abuses, but as one person stated there are no and i mean no stories about pain meds helping us with the quality of our lives and until that happens we will have a harder time with doctors, pharmacies, work and co workers and more tragically our family. why can't newspapers interview chronic pain patients and have them tell the readers that, at least for me, can work, travel, and lead a productive life and without pain meds, i would be on the couch not able to do anything. i don't know how one would go about contacting local news and say, hay, there are a lot of us who are chronic pain patients and we can and do lead productive lives by taking out meds. we don't drool, rob people, break into pharmacie, we are normal people who are helped. we don't want to take meds but we have to. if papers or tv would do human interest stories then i would be more optimistic. if one knows of a way to contact the media to do a story, please let me know.
ps i don't know why these information stories always turn into right vs wrong where people want to disagree about what i post. it was just a piece to let people know that the media still writes negative stories about us. i don't think there is anyting to disagree about in the story. if you want to argue then pm me and we can discuss it there. this is not the first time people disagree about a story i wrote for the sole purpose of information

  • Jon my response was to what you wrote..why don't they show stories about alcohol or cigarette abuse..and I said that I do see these other stories. I agree that it would be nice to see some positive stories..maybe contact 60 minutes or 48 hours.

I know pain patients are very sensitive to stories like this because there is so much focus on the wide spread abuse of the meds that help them so much. For good or for bad we live in a "big brother" country where our government sets rules and laws to protect us. Along the way some will always get hurt, but the concept is that the majority will be helped.

Perfect example - Just last week they revoked the approval of a cancer medicine that many claim saved their life. The reason was that the studies showed that the risks were greater than the benefit. So some who might have been helped will not be but many who might have been harmed won't be.

Only time will tell how this all plays out for narcotics in pain management. I have always placed my faith in my doctors who work with me to find the best available treatment.
  • Jon,

Broward county just popped 30+ pain pill mills this week - so yep, made the news. I basically roll it down to the news 'flavor of the week'... What gives them the "umm" bang for the buck?

We too down here get the football or baseball player getting nailed for said drugs (the common ones) in their system, and as such, those of us who use them are the bad guys - again!!!

Sadly, what returns the scratch (money) is what they are going to focus on and report [oops] adds to the ratings!!!... Sad, but true!!

    PCTF C4 - T2, Laminectomies C5, C6 & C7. Severe Palsy left arm/hand.
  • I think part of it is... few pain patients want to go on record and say that they are taking these meds (that others abuse) and are benefiting from them. We've seen a few that seemed to bring out more adverse attention than good.

I think the other part of it is... people drink, some people drink every day. Some of them, drive after hitting the bar and having 1 or 3 drinks. Even though research has shown that 2 drinks in less than 2 or 3 hours Can give some people a limit busting blood alcohol level.

Because they drink, because they drink and drive, even drink and drive with their kids in the car (as if threatening the rest of us isn't bad enough)... these people... most people will look at alcohol with less of an evil eye.

In my work I've had to deal with both drug addicts and alcoholics... and 99 times out of 100, I'll take the druggie over the drunk any day. Two exceptions... pcp and those mica folks (mental illness and chemical addiction).... they make even the drunks look easy to deal with.

Either way, the news folks will talk about the drug issues because the alcohol stories are only popular when something horrible happens... otherwise viewers might think those stories hit too close to home.
  • I think in NY the news is pretty neutral on these issues. They will go with stories that make a big splash on TV. But the newspapers and blogs seem to treat alcohol and drugs equally. In fact in the past year we have had more stories about alcohol than about drugs.

There is one big difference -- alcohol is legal to buy while most abusers of drugs are getting them illegally. The real story with drugs is how the person is getting them; pill mill, street, stealing from medicine cabinet or a well meaning doctor who hands over scripts like they are candy.

I think I am pretty up on current events and it seems to me that the enforcement agencies (DEA, police) are not as active in recent months. You guys talk about pill mills being busted but we haven't had any biggies in many months. I'm also not seeing a difference in my doctors.
  • don't forget the story about a month ago where the guy went into the pharmacy and shot some people because, i believe his wife said he needed pain meds. i cannot remember the specifics of the story but it made big news. i can see it now drug crazed patient shoots pharmacists because he needed drugs, i believe that was the jest of the story. really a positive story about chronic pain patients and my favorite dr drew and the show where they had interventions, one guy was on oxycontin due to chronic pain for back surgery and they had an intervention to get the guy off the meds. he said he needed them for pain but family did not seem to care. they just saw him as a drug addict. dr drew is always getting people to get off pain meds. he does not care if they have chronic pain but has them get off without any help or minimal dr care, basically cold turkey, but he lets them smoke on the show. that really gets me going, talking about your drug abuse but smoking cigaretts while going through thearpy

  • Hey Jon, was it you a while ago that was going to contact Oprah or Dr Oz, when they aired a show about narcotics and addiction? I remember a couple of people here said they did anyways. Of course, Oprah is off air now, but her besty Gayle has her own show now on the new "Oprah Network". I wonder, whoever sent the letters, if they ever got a response?

  • I only cought the 1 girl who claims she is taking pain meds because her back injury on dr phil. They sent her to the best hospital best spine dr,s and they told her she needs to get off the drugs and then only they will treat her but they looked at her mri and her condition does not warrant these pain medications. It became clear this girl is using a minor accident and is simply an addict.

This is what screws things up for us. They even offered her some surgery free of cost and she refused the help . Now if it was me and they offered me surgery where they say no more pain and no more drugs i be all over it.

I am not sure what intervenssion show you seen jon there are so many i cant keep up, For an addict its easy to say oh i have back pain. But they beter have had surgery of some sort to try to help that back pain and have medical records showing it. If the person refuses to go see a specialist and just uses there back pain to get drugs is usualy a good sighn they are just addicts its that simple and they should have family step in.

They cant step in unless they offer some sort of solution as an inpatient and they beter be able to help with the pain either with surgery or they will realise its back to drugs for failed surgery as drs at that point would agree.

Dont get me wrong i am not defending the media circus they put on around every stupid story because thats all that the local news is these days. The local news is becoming another reality tv show with very litle truth to it and they put on there own spin on every story for ratings. Its a joke,, I dont even watch the local news anymore but only the world news because local news is all bs.

You are lucky if you hear anything about the war on your local chanels as if we live in a bubble of what the media feeds us day in day out. And dr oz and the dr,s show along with the others can kiss my ass about how you can look beter and have softer skin and instead of puting more time in giving us more serious information about more serious medical treatments for spine surgery and such and puting the word out about surgery can destroy you while dr,s dont have the solution.

And yes they had 1 show about the scs for a patient big deal. Its not like it works for everyone. They need to step it up if they want to be taken seriously by patients who actualy have a serious ilness.

  • Actually, our local paper (which is also available on the internet) did a story, or several I should say about drug abuse in Utah, about how many die because of pain meds, blah, blah, blah. I e-mailed the author and told her I would LOVE to do a story about the flip side and how many people live with non-stop agonizing pain every single day and if it weren't for their medication to provide some relief, their may be others dying for other reasons. No response to that - why? They don't want to hear about it - only the bad side of it about the abusers and other BS. Pain is not recognized as a legitimate medical issue and that is where it all begins! Pain patients are going to be in big trouble I believe. Drugies will always get their drugs but I believe in the future it will be harder and harder for us - the legitimate people.
  • i believe the show i was talking about was called intervention. they also do alcoholism and also speed, cocaine, and other drugs. the poor guy i saw literally ran out of the house when they confronted him but he recanted and decided to go into rehab. i think the pressure of being on national tv might have had to do something with it also. dr drew with his celebrity rehab is anther joke. pain meds make pain worse, not better is his mantra. i believe he gets people off with cold turkey albeit with some medical help but it is minimal. i don't know why he does not use rapid detox techniques. i guess he believes one must suffer to get off narcotics. he did not help poor jeff conway. anyway, my point is that nothing will get better ;until the media is more subjective about pain meds. too much drama which makes with good tv. as one can see i get real anal about this topic. too much free time on my hands. when i go back to school in the fall, it will change. take care all pain patients and hope your pain gets better
I have 4 fusions from L5-3, the latest last May '12 where they fixed my disc that broke. They went through my side this time. I take 40 mg of oxycontin 4x a day and 4 fenatyl lollipops 300 micro gms 4x a day.
  • I do watch Dr. Drew Celebrity Rehab and don't understand either why he lets people smoke while getting them off drugs. He does have drug abusers and alcohol abusers in there mixed with people that have chronic pain. They should be handled differently in my opinion. When I read of Jeff Conway's dying, I cried. I had seen tapes of him extremely high, but he needed help from the doctors so he didn't have to use illegal drugs for his chronic pain. Most chronic pain sufferers need some pain meds just to function at all. I am at the point where my "functioning" is staying in bed at least 95 to 98% of the time, but at least I am not screaming from the pain. At times it still brings me to tears, but I am going to try an SCS next week to see if that can help. If not, I will see what I can do next. I am not on strong enough drugs at this time in my opinion. But before they will give me more, they want me to try the SCS. I am currently on 10mg oxycodone every 4 to 6 hours, 350mg soma every 8 hours, and 10 mg valium for panic attacks 1 to 2 times a day as needed. They barely take the edge off. I have had 5 spinal surgeries with cages, rods, plates, screws, bone grafts from my hips, and cadaver bones from levels C2 thru C7 and all L thru S levels but L1 done, some of them 2 to 3 times. None of them have helped my pain; they just stabilized my spine. My family can't understand this. I have had surgeries, i.e. I should have no more pain. I also have had too many injections, discograms, radio frequency, and every other test and procedure done they can do more than once. I am now practically disowned. Yet there are illegal drug users in the family, and strong alcoholics and they are accepted. I really got lectured when Dr. Oz said on an Oprah show that you should be off all pain pills within 2 weeks of a surgery. Makes me want to have him go through what I have and see if he feels differently. I do like him, but that comment really got under my skin. I wrote in here before that I am going to let my family believe I am off all pain meds if my SCS works so maybe they will accept me again. I hate lying, but they are so ignorant. Most of them have genius IQ levels and are supposed to be forgiving Christians, but there is no smartness or forgiveness when it comes to me. I know I should move on and let the toxic people stay out of my life, but it is hard to do. I am 60 years old and miss my family; especially my daughters and my grandchildren who were my best friends. It is hard to make new friends when you are stuck lying in bed. Even people from my church have forgotten about me. I was very active and helped the church out tremendously. I have never heard from one person from there during my surgeries. They know I am completely disabled and live alone. I don't even drive if I have taken any of my drugs; I am way too careful. So when the media starts in on illegal drug use, I get thrown in with the wolves. Why don't people understand it is 2 different things. I have had several psych evaluations (they all said I wasn't a drug abuser), and have even changed doctors to please my daughters. They have access to all my records but choose to ignore them. Thank God for you people on here.

Hoping and praying the government doesn't make it even harder or impossible to get the things we need,
