SINCE LIFE AS I ONCE LIVED IT (& I WAS A WILD MAN (ie. Soccer, skiing, car wreck w/ no injury, now 28 with "a 65 yr old neck" according to one OS Specialist 's diagnosis) NOW Choice up for discussion at this S-H.com FORUM community: Your HELP IS one of LAST on my pre-op checklist ..timeline(12/08 ACDF C5/6 w/ alograft, 3/10 ACDF C5/6 w/ alograft revision, now after many, many different/competiting drs appts at multiple regional centers and specialties over last 2+ months, decision is toI have my third C/5C/6 fusion in just wks. and the top ATL NS has sent me to ENT appt for Swallowing and Vocal chord pre-op assessment test, its all good news- no swelling or prior scar tissue) at last i've decided my best option is with an Atl Dr who wants to use right anterior n stead of previsously used left side -drs way of tattoo if u ask me, have been out of work and nearly given up hope that i can ever regain my life- he wants to use the c5 bone to add BMP and fuse C4 to 6 for this one. What is the chance of my recovery this method with strong PT plan? Not overweight have any issues, but prior fusion has not been good bony bridge either time. The microloosening of screws b/c xams shown movement still at 5/6 have compromised C5's "integrity" as another C5/6 would not stop this ongoing hell of constant neck pain usually dull, sharp with any movement, intensified by large osteophytes above prior fusions that i believe were caused by excess use of CMP's Bone Growth Stimulator, instead of helping fuse on the second attempt. Would this community please help me analyze anytthing im missing, Ruled out not doing anything, taking drugs rest of life that dont help, feels like nerve pain, but diagnosis includes loosening hardware and psuedoarthorisis, osteophytes,. Any of u had revision regret or know about laser treatments? Adult Stem cells? Willing to go to ends of earth - using heat, ice, sombra salve, weekly massage, special pillows at night on couch n car, neck brace, hot tub, TENS, prescribed narcotics, lyrica, cymbalta, zanaflex,

AND NOTHING MAKES IT GO AWAY!!!! So should i be confident i will heal this time? how do i know this will help after first two didnt! What would you do if you've seen all the right ppl, gotten varying answers on what to do or not do and be forced to decide something or u r gonna give up

  • I cannot begin to advise on what u r going thru. This month is 1 yr since my back went out 4 apparently no reason. I had been a runner 4 30+ yrs & knew I had L4-L5 herniation which responded to steroid injections. Not last November. Then began the downward spiral to mobility by crawling until neurologist announced (w/ MRI & nerve conduction) spinal stenosis, & spondylolisthesis on top of herniation.I was given pages of drug scripts & told come back in 3 months!I see how people get addicted to these drugs. I took what I needed to function, osteopath sent me 2 neurosurgeon who said I needed back surgery. Orthopedic surgeon said no. I needed 2 know what caused this new pain. I believe it was my special work out shoes, very extreme.By May I was in PT for 9 sessions, taking meds, but also finding & using natural remedies. I drank yellow mustard for the anti inflammatory benefit of it's tumeric, and took GABA for pain neurotransmitter inhibitor.I went from PT to great massage therapist, and I have been back in gym on elliptical & biking so as not to cause more trauma to back.I am doing well, but I am going to Mayo Clinic 4 expert neurosurgeon opinion. Cervical spine problems I read can b very painful, not easily diagnosed & quality of life restored to as b4. I am 60+ & I refuse to let this become my old age. I was not old until last year. I will probably not have surgery, because of what I read on this site. If the shoes traumatized my back, then not using them & other conservative measures will restore me. I am now not nearly as frightened as i was in January when I could not even get a Dr. appointment w/ good health care. I want to be able to run again. My mom is 90 & disabled by stroke 10 yrs ago. I have resolved I am not going to PUT myself in the position she's in;immobile. I know...not 2 have surgery could lead 2 that consequence any way. I believe in cause/effect. I can only send you positive energy & encouragement, ask, explore, write letters, look for clinical trials. If Mayo or other specialty clinics r available to u, use them & if not write them any way, there is pro bono. I believe in the Goodness of the Universe, & it's laws of cause/effect.I must do Something, as we all must.
