Finding neurosurgeon who will deal with auto insurance

I was in a car accident and hit by a drunk driver about two months ago and have had numbness in my arm. First MRI and ct scan confirmed herniated discs at c5/6 and to a lesser degree at c4/5. It was initially thought I had no nerve impingement but the numbness hasn't improved. I went to a neurologist and got an emg which said the problem was originating at c5/6 and the second MRI now shows impingement there. She wants me to go see a nuerosurgeon. Problem is no one wants to accept the auto insurance (usaa) that has been paying for everything else. The nuerologist wouldn't take it either and I had to pay for that out of pocket (about 2000 total my entire savings) and still waiting for reimbursement. How do I deal with this? I am not wealthy nor do I have any family that can help. The neurosurgeon wants a minimum down of 1000 for consult and eval. Initially I was thinking thank god we had such high medpay and underinsured driver coverage but it makes no difference if no specialists will accept it! I'm sure others have dealt with similar issues. Is there a way to work around it? Will insurance ever pay for bills upfront? I have no personal health insurance. Any advice would be appreciated. I'm about ready to pull my hair out over this.

Try to get a letter of approval from the insurance company for the Nuero visit. This might help. The problem with auto accidents is that it takes forever for the insurance companies to pay. I would submit a claim to the auto insurance with estimated cost of the office visit and ask for pre-payment. Explain your situation to the person who is in charge of your insurance case. Call the Phy. office and ask the amount that will be owed during the date of service. You will need the Drs tax id number so the insurance company can pay him or her. This may or may not work, the only other option I can think of is going directly thru the hospital who will accept the insurance. Good luck.
  • I've had no problem with the hospital. They accept the insurance no problem and are apparently getting paid promptly (while I am not ha!). Unfortunately there are no specialists who take appts. a the hospital. It seems they are all off in private practice and just affiliated with the hospital. All their billing is separate. I'm going to chat with my lawyer tomorrow and see what kind of magic they can work. One phone call last month and miraculously the bills started getting paid so obviously they have some sway. The one silver lining is the Spine Center is within the hospital so at least they are goin to bill the upcoming injections to insurance. This has just become such a mess. Pretty frustrating to know I live in a place were a drunk can destroy your life and only pay a 500 fine while I struggle to pick up the pieces...
  • I hope the attorney can work something out for you

Hope you get taken care of & when you are better,
That you receive a settlement to in some way
Compensate you for what you are going through

    Sending good thoughts!
