  • Hi there
I am 6 weeks post op after L4/L5 decompression surgery (with laminectomy). I had severe nerve compression with cauda equina symptoms which required emergency surgery. I suffered a dural tear during surgery, which had me on my back in hospital for 6 days after surgery.
Before surgery I had very little pain, but numbness to most of my left leg and foot, ankle instability/foot drop and muscle weakness, including left glute not responding at all.

Since surgery my glute has recovered, but i still have numbness to lower leg and foot. I have to wear an AFO to support my foot and ankle. I did not have much sciatic pain before or after op - but since returning to work yesterday (desk job 9am til 6pm) I have taken lots of short walks and breaks ...... But I now have sciatic pain all down my leg! It is worse behind left knee and into calf.

Has anyone else found that their pain has returned when they have gone back to work?

I don't see surgeon again until 2 days time, but he is fairly useless because he told me I would need to go back part time phasing back to full time...... But he didn't send me a doctors note or tell me how many hours I should be working - even though I chased him up,twice for this! I can't legally go back part time without the doctors note?? So I have had to go back full time until I get the correct advice!

I have been walking 2 miles a day for the last week or so, but have not been today because of this pain returning!

I had surgery at L5/S1 last January and it was a doodle compared to this!!
Jan 2011 fenestration discectomy L5/S1 - total recovery
    May 2012 - decompression and laminectomy L4/L5
MRI shows slight bulge at L3/L4, not symptomatic yet....
