hello from canada, thought should introduce myself though really not my style......however, I have had severe back pain for maybe two years now......when it first occured I went to chiropractor thinking crack here and pop there all would be well, no such luck came home in worse pain, then tried physio but mainly consisted of accupuncture which left me unable to make it home, just across the parking lot and being in hospital for pain mgt for 8 days......have had cat scan and MRI which showed severe spinal stenosis and a nerve being pinched......have tried the epidural cortisone shot, did not even last 24 hrs....have been waiting since february for medial nerve block.......got a call from neurosurgeon receptionist kelowna hospital has been trying to reach you for appt, this was in june, returned the call immediately only to be told they could not get me so referral sent back and now would be starting from june requisition...it is now sept 14th and no news......I feel I am being punished for something beyond my control.........I am a careaide for seniors and this is gruelling work......I have been lucky so far in diminished client transfers etc but now have hard time even moving at all period.....it is just not right to pay for having pain and then their qualifying period of 4 mos...get real...how do you manage that...yes I am angry, can anyone shed some light on anything I may be missing etc? thank you in advance, I really am a mild and sweet person but pushed to the limit....

  • Hello fellow Canadian. Welcome to spine health, though sorry that your pain has brought you here. It can be such a waiting game for specialists, pain management etc in Canada. The referal to the neurosurgeon...is that for a surgical consult or for the medial branch block? Can you let us know what levels your stenosis and and pinched nerve are at? Have you tried different meds, cold, heat, tens to help with your pain?

I also worked in healthcare and have been unable to return to work since my injury, and can sympatize with how difficult it would be work wise.

Hope that you are able to get in soon for your appointment. Please keep in touch and let us know how you are doing.

Thank you for you response, I was just about to withdraw......the appt I have waited 9 mos for is for the actual proceedure of medial nerve block.....I have seen the neurosurgeon three times and have called and left msgs as to any new occurences of my back problem, he just wants to wait and see on the nerve block......I have severe central stenosis at L3-4 and L4-5....the exiting left L2 nerve root is contacted and deviated as a result of foraminal disc protusion on the left at L2-3......can I ask please are you on disability, if so, how was the process and did it indeed take 4 months? I thank you in advance for any help or explanations.....you would give me........
  • I live in Canada and on CP disability. It did take 4 months for me to get disability accepted after I sent in the application with every single test result and consults I've had. I was on disability from work first before I applied and hadn't worked in over a year before i had to apply for CPP disability. I think they really look at if you're unable to work at all in any job but think if you're still working it may be an issue but not completely sure how it works..

For sure they look at your ability to care for yourself but also consider age also. Most of all if your Dr. is very thorough with the application for disability and you in your description of what you can do how far you can walk or if you use a cane is what they look for also.
While awaiting disability you may have to go on government benefits in the meantime if you can or if you have short term benefits at work. .

I hope you get the injection soon. 9 months is an awful long wait for your injections so I would email or call them to see if they have a cancellation. Take care. Charry
