c1 c2 fusion and possible atlas axis fusion

I am in my 30's and I'm terrified. I had been having neck pain for almost a year. In that time I had been to 5 or 6 doctors to see what the problem was. I had taken an MRI not once but twice 5 months apart. Every doctor would tell me they didn't see anything to be worried about and to go to physical therapy. I did and to 3 different ones. It wasn't helping me in fact a couple of them made me feel worse. About 5 months after the second MRI I went to see another spine specialist and he took some x-rays. Well those X rays showed a subluxation of c1 and c2. He sent me to another spine surgeon. He took CT's also and said I might not only have to have my c1 and c2 fused, but also my head. I'm freaking out because I'm terrified. He said I would have major reduction of movement up and down and side to side. I'm only in my 30's and I like to be active. What is life going to be like after this? Does anyone know? They don't want to fuse my head, but they won't know until they go in. He compared my mri and said had I come in 5 months ago I would not need the head fused for sure. I'm so angry that these so called best doctors I went to missed all this. I kept telling them that something was not right, but they kept saying oh it's nothing you'll be ok with physical therapy. Can someone help me understand life after this?

  • I had a serious horse related injury in 08 and have been everywhere including Mayo clinic and have had every test known to man or women in my case. Nothing much showed in all those mri and ct's etc. I finally went to an upercervical chiropractor or nucca doctor and he is the only one to give me relief. I was still having severe neurologic symptoms at times, including loss of balance, difficulty speaking etc. I just had a DMX done. This showed that all of the ligaments in my neck, alar and every other one were torn or stretched and my C1 has a significant tilt bilatterally. Anyway, the bottom line is, my vertebrae are not staying alligned because my ligaments are damaged severely. So what next. Fusion? Seems like there could be some serious complications with surgery. My issue is near my brain stem and thus the neurological problems. Anyone else find a solution? Hugs to you Sue
  • Would you please update your experience with the NUCCA doctor. From the research I've done, when you are in alignment with the atlas and axis healing starts. Even with severe damaged ligaments. The toughest part is getting there. Which at this point I'm thinking how long do I have to wait....Hugs to both of you :)
