Swallowing problems after neck surgery?

Swallowing problems after surgery anyone? I was told there could be swallowing problems with my surgery (C6-C7 fusion in October of 2012) and had it just after surgery. I've had problems off and on swallowing me medicine. (I take four pills a day) There is a lot of times, like tonight, when I just get this feeling like I'm being choked. It's all in my throat though. I took my pill tonight and even though it is quite small it still got stuck in my throat for awhile. It's a horrible feeling. I seem to have it when I swallow pills. Anyone else?

  • My surgery was on Jan 3 and a wound cleanup was on Jan 17. I had some very fierce swallowing issues. They are gradually diminishing but you are right, pills are the worst. Sometimes they go down and sometimes they hang up. Recently, I have been successful with swallowing "hard" after a hang up and thank goodness that has worked to dislodge. It is awful to have a bitter pill slowing dissolving in your throat. I find I have to chew all my food to a pulp and chase each bite with a drink.
The upside? I have lost 12 pounds.
Do you have problems swallowing food?

4 level ACDF completed on January 3rd.
I developed an infection which required reopening the wound on January17th
Looking forward to life without as much pain!
  • Swallowing food seems to be ok for some reason it's just the pills! I'm 4 1/2 months post-op though. I did have problems with food at first.
