Odd Grinding / Popping in Neck

Hello. First time posting. Thanks in advance for your help.

I am experiencing an odd grinding feeling in my neck when I move it from right to left while looking down. If I am not physically looking down where my chin is nearly touching my chest, this grinding doesn't occur. Sometimes, I notice a very slight, almost a sharp needle, pressing into my neck when I am driving my car and immediately turn my head.

Upon further feeling / rubbing of my neck, I notice some areas of the neck near the spine which are somewhat sensitive. With my little understanding of the neck, I'd say this senstivity is felt near the Axis and C3. However, I can't identify the exact location of the grinding.

I have experienced this for about a year now. I don't know the cause. I noticed this without feeling any pain or discomfort. Just really weird.

Any advice or expertise is appreciated. I understand most will say "Go to a doctor, get checked", but first I would like to do some self-research.
