Potential SI joint issues: How to proceed?

Hello All,

I have had periodic issues for several years that may not have been diagnosed correctly. I experienced severe left hip and lower back pain. Pain radiating down my left leg along with tingling at times. Also groin pain.

Along with that I had severe hemorrhoid issues that were properly diagosed. I was under the impression that all of the pain I was experiencing was due to the hemorrhoids. I had hemorrhoid surgery and spent a considerable period off time off my feet and with limited time on my feet. The hemerrhoids healed and the hip/back subsided.

From time to time since the hip/back pain has come back but not been severe. Then two weeks ago I was having minor hemerrhoid issues and had a severe and sudden return of the hip/back pain. I turned to get into my pickup and felt like I was hit in the lower back with a cattle prod. My pain was to the point I could barely walk. I saw my primary care provider (ARNP) and was given muscle relaxants and pain killers. After a week I was much improved. I was up moving about and turned to pick up a small trash basket and got the cattle prod again. This time the pain was even worse. I went to a colo-rectal surgeon and was told that the pain was not hemerrhoids. He said "this is outside my speciality but it looks like SI joint issues". He recommended that I get a referal from my PCP to an orthopaedic surgeon for further diagnostics & treatment.

My searching & study on the Web has been supportive of his observation. I also have read several suggestions that that the discomfort from the hemerrhoids may have caused me to walk/stand/sit in unusual ways and perhaps caused temporary SI issues.

Here is my question: As my symptoms have improved significantly and the soonest I can get in to see another doctor is about 2 weeks should I make an appointment and go see the doctor with llitle or no symptoms or should I watch and see if symptoms return and then seek a specialist?

  • Even if you go to the appointment with no symptoms, you will then be an "established patient" and if you have another major flare up, you'll probably be able to get in much quicker. Plus they will do x-rays most likely and that will give them some indication of what possibly could be wrong.
