Pregnant and severe pain radiating down hip

I haven't posted here for a while. I'm looking for advice. In January 2011 after an mri I was diagnosed with 2 disc prolapses L4-L5 of the lower back. One being more severe than the other. They also said I had ddd.

Since then I did everything I could: physio, swimming, walking and pilates. On my last visit to the consultant he was very happy with my progress.

My life has been great. I even took up cycling, spinning and badminton. I rarely needed any pain meds.

I am now 12 weeks pregnant with our first baby. Things couldn't be any better. However, this last month or so I've noticed pain in my right hip. Not constant, niggling just. It has since got worse. I can't lie on that side. Sometimes when I take a step the pain is excruciating and it nearly puts me off balance. I do not have pain in my lower back but when I touch it, it is very tender.

What should I do?? With me being pregnant my options are limited. Do you guys think its the old discs playing up again.

  • I'd see your GP for a check up (Do you have GPs in the US?). I've never been pregnant, but looking into the possible issues because we want to have a kid soon and I've got all kinds of rubbish going on in spine!

I think you should ask about whether its SPD - quite common in pregnancy so I'm told. Apparently the hormone relaxin also comes into force and can destabilise your back. Not sure if there is much you can do, apart from taking mild paracetamol and using cold/heat, get a good mattress etc.
