T11-T12 hernitated disk, tons of lower back pain and abdmional pain?

I have a T11-T12 herniated disk that is 1cm and I have alot of lower mid back pain and often also comes severe upper abdominal pain. I have to have my back massaged to lessen abdominal pain a bit! Anyone else have this? What else can you do to help the pain go away?
I also have herniated L5-S1 that displaces S1 nerve and causes painful sciatica every night for 2 years but thats for another forum board.

  • I have herniated discs in my thoracic spine, two of them slightly compressing my cord.
I get some pain which is like a tightening band around my abdomen, especially on the left side. Sometimes I get a spasming of the muscles around my chest that stops me in my tracks. I also get occassional pain over my left lung which makes it painful to take a deep breath.

I find that slightly leaning over to the right side to stretch out the muscles seems to help a bit.
When I have the pain over my lung nothing helps. I just have to wait a day or few days until it goes.
Have you tried spinal injections? My surgeon has said that we could try those if I want. I am coping with the pain at the moment so will wait and see how things progress.

    Have you tried icing?

It sounds like you have other problems in your spine too. I had a lumbar fusion done 3 years ago and a 2 level ACDF done nearly 6 months ago.

Take care Michelle, and I hope that you will find a way to get relief from the pain.

  • Thank you for the response and advice. No I haven't tried icing. Do I ice back or nerve area that is being effected?

  • To be honest, I am not sure.
When I iced, it was always over my lower back where the nerves were being compressed, and that makes sense.
Can you ask your doctor about it? Or hopefully someone else will be along to share their experience.

Do make sure that you cover the ice/cold pack with a cloth to stop an ice burn and only leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes at a time.

I hope that it will help you with the pain. :-)

  • Hi Michelle, I have had back issues since 1984 when I was 19 and then finally had first lumbar lamenectomy 4-5 in 1994 and numerous ESIs over the next 12 yrs. on and off. Then in 2008 herniated the same L4-5 in Oct and had surgery and reherniated again 3 weeks later and had surgery once again in Dec. Lumbar pain is so much different than the thoracic pain I started experiencing in 2011. My mid back would ache so bad at work from sitting many hours on phone or sitting on backless stools while rooming patients in a doctor office. In Jan. 2012 I started having chest pain on left side and since my husbands heart problems and open heart surgery I just knew I had heart issues. I had full work up and even heart cath which showed everything was normal but while laying on table during and after cath my mid spine pain became severe. I went straight to my GP who I worked for and after seeing xrays she took made an appt. with my NS. He ordered MRI and it showed severe stenosis at T7-8 and since it was calcified they sent me to Duke to a specialist who did my microdiscectomy on May 24, 2012 and I still have problems with pain. The pain I had and continue to have is left rib pain that wraps aound to upper left abdomen and causes pain and still have pain that feels like heart related. The thoracic pain has been unrelenting. I have been on pain meds since last Jan, 2012. I never had to take pain meds regularly after any of my other surgeries. I feel for you and if you would like to talk or have any questions please dont hesitate to PM me.
