bursitis in hips? after micro diskecetomy

I had a micro diskecetomy on 05/09 for my L5-S1 herniated disc. I have since then been having hip pain. The doctor said it was bursitis. I also have arthritis of the hips. Does anyone else have this? If so how are you handling it? It gives me the hardest time going to sleep.
Im 30. Had micro diskecetomy on 05/09/13. I had a herniated disc at L5-S1 that after 6 months of different treatments I was only getting worse.

is pretty common after having spinal surgery. My last spinal surgery was in 2000, but I have been having increasing arthritis in all of my joints. The first to go were my shoulders. After a couple of years of increasing pain and countless steroid injections, I finally needed to have both shoulders completely replaced.

Several years ago, I started having hip pain. From previous bone scans and understanding what happened to my shoulders, the degrading arthritis finally resulted in having one hip totally replaced.

There are some differences between Bursitis and Arthritis. I added some brief definitions below. I do encourage you
to take a look at Veritas (Spine-Health's) Arthritis site - http://www.arthritis-health.com/

Bursitis is a painful condition resulting from inflammation of a bursa. Normally smooth and slippery, the bursa becomes swollen and inflamed creating a rough surface that causes much friction when moved.

Osteoarthritis is a chronic disorder characterized by pain and stiffness in the joints caused by damage to the cartilage and other supportive tissues. Though it can affect any joint, osteoarthritis is most commonly found in the weight-bearing joints of the hips, knees, and feet.

  • For that information. My hips have been hurting a lot since I had my back surgery. I feel as if the pain is getting worse and it is hard to sleep. Maybe because I have been resting since my surgery? I start back at work tomorrow and will be moving a lot more. I can't take anti inflammatories I have a history of stomach ulcers. I'm going to look into finding a specialist. Any advice on vitamins or something specific that helps? Ill check out the website. Thanks again!

  • Did your orthro do the shot or another specialist? How long has it kept the pain away? Mine started in the left, but is now on both.

    Thank you for your input,

An ortho can do the shots or pain management doc. There are some exercises to do to help. If you have access to a warm water pool, that could help. You could also ask your doctor if you have issues with trigger points, and if PT might help. Are you having any issues into the groin? I am seeing a PT whose specialty is dealing with pelvic pain.

I have arthritis and fibromyalgia as well as spine issues, so it's difficult for me to pinpoint what is causing the pain wherever.

Do you use a pillow under/between your legs when you sleep? It can help some.

  • Hi! When I first had my sciatica I had an xray done that showed arthritis of the hips. When my pain got worse I had an MRI that showed a big herniating disc at L5-S1 it was pinching my nerves pretty good. I had groin pain before my surgery, but not in my hips. The day I woke up from my micro diskecetomy my leg and groin pain were completely gone. No more numbing or tingling in my leg either. I'm 4 weeks post op. About 2 wks after surgery I had my follow up and my surgeon told me the pain I now had in my hips was bursitis. He showed me 2 stretches and said it was common that's it.

The hip pain is on both sides now. I do sleep with a body pillow in between my legs. I've tried sleeping on my back, but my incision still hurts. I tried sleeping flat on my stomach and its just too weird. So ill alternate sides during the night, but wake up super sore in the morning. Its hard to sleep also.

    Thank you!

  • Hi, I had L5-S1 discectomy/laminectomy 5 months ago. My leg pain is gone, but I still have severe pain in my hip area which wakes me up at night. My doc in the past told me I have bursitis and/or the pain could be coming from inflammation in my back. The only thing that has helped me is acupuncture or steroids(which I don't like to take too often). Also, floating in the pool.
