Anyone had Cervical Surgery without fusion?

I am six weeks out of surgery. I had a posterior hemilaminectomy c6c7 without fusion. The Dr. just took out the 2 herniated discs and made more room in there from what I understand.

Has anyone had this procedure? Everyone I know has had anterior with fusion. I'm still in pain and not where I went to be. I did see a pain specialist, as surgeon said all is healing well. He said I could have pain for another year and we are just trying to manage the pain with nerve meds.

I thought this was minimally invasive and back to life after two weeks. Not at all....

  • I had a posterior laminectomy at c7-t1 on april 26th and the recovery was not as easy as I thought it would be either. I'd been told I could be back to work in a month and that was really unrealistic. I spent 7 weeks out of work, and even though I'm back now I can still feel some weaknesses and pain that will probably take longer to heal. My surgeon said this is because even though the work done on the actual spine is less than with an ACDF they have to cut a lot of muscles doing the surgery posterior and it takes awhile to heal from that. Also with nerve compression it can take up to a year for the nerves to fully heal, if they ever do. Overall though I'm two and a half months out now and feeling much better, but the first month was pretty miserable.

  • Hi

Thanks for responding. I'm starting my 10th week and feeling better. Good to know there's hope and at 2.5 months you are feeling much better. You are right the first month was the worst!
