Muscle spasms following three level spinal fusion with instrumentation

I am nearly 4 weeks post op following a three level fusion including a fracture, and suffering horrific spasms in my buttocks and legs. The doctrine has prescribed Valium for this, but the twice daily dosages aren't nearly enough. Has anyone else had significant spasming, and do you have any suggestions for controlling it? No other surgical pain exists.

  • Unfortunately this is *usually* a part of recovery, and you are still new in the recovery process. Lots of people have great success with Valium for spasms. I did not, but everyone's body is different. I found Flexiril to work better with my body. It worked best when I used it in combination with nerve meds (for me gabapentin) and when it was really bad in combination with oxycodone. I suggest you call your surgical nurse and let him/her know the Valium isn't working. Perhaps they can change it all together or give you some other pointers. Good luck!
33yo mom of two. My surgical history...preadolescence scoliosis, kyphosis, and a hot mess.... 5 spine surgeries and lots of items added I wasn't born with (titanium, peek, surgical steel). Guess cremation is out. TSA loves me.
