Finally operation booked

I have been placed on the waiting list and have just received my letter to say what it is I am having done. I am down to have a L4/5 and L5/S1 discectomy with possible instrumented fixation from L4/S1. Does this mean that they will be fixing them or fusing them? Not quite sure.

After I have got over this operation I am down to have an ACDF.

Onwards and upwards and working towards being pain free.

I am sorry to hear that you need to have spinal surgery, but when needed it can be very helpful in improving our spine problems.

Instrumented fixation means using 'hardware' such as screws and rods to hold the spine in place while it fuses.
If you search on this site in the 'treatment' section at the top of the page, and then in 'back surgery', you will find articles on discectomy and fusions using instrumentation/hardware. There is also a thread at the top of the Back and Neck Surgeries section which has a list of useful items for post surgery. If you can't find this, let me know and I will post a link to it. :-)

I can see that you are quite new to Spine Health, so welcome.
This is a great place to learn about your spine problem and the proposed treatment for it.
The forum is a great place to meet fellow sufferers and they will give you great support in the anxious phase while you await surgery and then once you are home again and in your recovery.

Do ask any other questions that you may have. :-)
