The bone growth stimulator should help to ensure fusion, which is why your surgeon ordered it for you. If you follow the post op instructions of the doctor, hopefully, it will get you there sooner rather than later.
The other thing that I read is that some patients are told to take calcium to help ensure fusion.
  • This is the advice my surgeon gave (for a L5-S1 redo fusion):

    1. No smoking
    2. Ensure Vit D and Calcium levels are right (they checked for a deficiency)
    3. Wear the brace as prescribed
    4. Be patient
    5. Do the exercise as prescribed and walk, walk and walk.

I fused, but it took 18 months.

I had my surgery in June so I'm coming up on 12 weeks. I am due for another set of x-rays prior to my next visit. At my last appt there wasn't much to see as far as new growth but it did look cloudy so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for new growth. I do not smoke and I am weaning off the brace but still wear it as my surgeon suggested...i.e., if I feel like I need it wear it. I definitely wear it when I'm driving or sitting in the car.

May I ask how much calcium you are taking. I juist started taking 1200 mg per day.

I do my exercises that P/T recommended but I can surprised that it took you 018 months. Were you wearing an exterior bone stimulator? I use one but its only timed for 30 minutes per day.

Thanks for any infor you can give me
  • Avoid NSAIDS.

Pretty much the entire category - naproxen, ibuprofen, etc. have been found to inhibit new bone growth, so stick to acetaminophen (eg: Tylenol)

For my two-level lumbar fusion, I was advised to be sure to get "enough" calcium and protein. To this end, I've added a calcium 600+D and a multivitamin daily, and I generally also have a Glucerna or Ensure once a day as these have calcium and protein, not to mention a host of other vitamins.
