Driving after surgery

I had surgery one month ago, L3,4,5 fusion I am not on any pain medication now. Things are going really good for me, the brace and I argue at times, but I do wear it.

What I would like to know those of you that have had surgery, how long before you could drive a car? I know a lady who had the same surgery and the same Dr., she drove 2 weeks after the surgery. I am afraid to drive if I am not suppose to. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • I was not allowed to drive for 3 months. I had a S1-L5, L5-L4 ALIF.
  • I was allowed to drive short distances at 7 weeks. I suggest you call your surgeon's office and speak to the surgical coordinator. Let her know you are off pain meds and ask about driving.
33yo mom of two. My surgical history...preadolescence scoliosis, kyphosis, and a hot mess.... 5 spine surgeries and lots of items added I wasn't born with (titanium, peek, surgical steel). Guess cremation is out. TSA loves me.

It depends on the surgeon, so call the office and ask them when they will release you to drive. If you have no neuro deficit and are not taking medications that effect your reflexes, you may be surprised that he allows you to drive now if you feel comfortable.
  • I began driving about a week and half after my fusions. I also didn't have a brace. Like you I wasn't taking any pain meds. I had no choice but to start driving my husband was out on the truck, so that left me home alone. I agree with Sandi call your surgeon and see what they say.
