I'm a 36 year old male who has been experiencing intermittent shooting pain in the lower back to upper leg area from time to time. The pain started after a few weeks of heavy lifting and climbing and briefly "heals" only to come back after stooping/lifting/climbing type activities. I've been ignoring the pain for about a year now and have come to the realization that it is unlikely to go away without changes in my activity level and/or medical/chiropractic care.
My main difficulty is in trying to describe the type of pain and circumstances in which it happens. That's why I joined here -- trying to get some background information so I'm not blindly going to a doctor without a clue as to what to expect.
Here's the deal: If I'm moving the pain is gone. When I stop moving, specifically if I sit or lay down, the pain happens, but only when I change positions. For example, I have pain tossing/turning while sleeping on a memory foam mattress. I find myself basically bouncing against the bed before I rotate to eliminate any torsional type stress on my lower back in bed. I've been sleeping on the couch for months and that has reduced my sleeping pain problems. I drive 25 minutes to work. When my back is acting up, I experience what I call a complete lockup condition trying to get out of the car. Sometimes the pain is so severe that I have to back/fall back into the seat and make a second attempt at getting out after fully rotating my body, straightening my upper body as much as possible then "lifting" myself out of the car.
The lockup conditions happen when getting up from the couch after working that day. Sometimes I'm shuffling stooped over for 5 or 10 paces before I can gradually straighten back up. Once straight, I'm fine.
No activity causes pain while I'm up and moving.
As far a the pain is concerned, it seems to be mostly between my lower back and pelvis but sometimes seems to shoot down my upper front leg area. The pain is not dull, numb or anything of that sort. I'd call it sharp/piercing/electrifying pain.
My question is this: I know someone on the forum has experienced something very similar or identical and I'm just wanting to hear what it was for you, and what course of action corrected the concern. I've searched around but only see general descriptions of types of pain, not explicit examples.
Any insight is appreciated.
