L5 S1 Lumbar disc herniation surgery with myelopathy

I have degenerative disc disease but after I suffered a fall in June 2013 I started to suffer with severe pain and numbness on my right side ( which is the side i fell on ) so I got an MRI and I had herniated my disk in my lower lumbar L5 S1. So i had the microdiscetomy on 9-9-2013 & I am now 2 weeks post op and having more pain and numbness than ever before and the pain now travels to the left side which I never had any pain on my left side before ? Im afraid I will require another surgery. As I am tryping this my entire right leg and foot is numb ?? This is very scarey to me as I am a single mother to a 6yr old little boy I need to be able to walk again and my foot (right) is dragging like its just hanging there by threads...

If you have increasing numbness, and your foot is dragging, then you need to contact your surgeon asap for an evaluation. When you have new symptoms, and loss of function, the only person who should provide you with advice is your treating doctor.
  • I have an appt on Tuesday Sept 24th im just scared to have another surgery and Im thinking thats what may happen because I can feel my heartbeat in the left side of my backits a constant pain that I didnt have before surgery
  • It's totally understandable to be concerned, and even scared. The doctor can tell you better what might be going on. I know after my laminectomy and discectomy I did have nerve pain in places I hadn't before (sciatic pain down the back of the left leg). My doctor explained how nerves can be "angry" after surgery and impact areas previously quiet, and gave me prednisone which helped. It's difficult with the new pain, but it's great you have an appointment soon. I hope you can get answers and relief soon.
    4 level ACDF C4-C7 5-2-11, laminectomy & discectomy L4-L5 1/26/12, ALIF L4-5, L5-S1 12/10/12.
  • Well my next appt is 12/5/13 and it's become so much worse now only on my left side ??? The right foot is still numb and the pain is 8/9 at all times therapy helps very little I'm just so frustrated and my primary care dr suggested another MRI or even a fusion ?? I don't care at this point I just want one day pain free
  • They want to fusion on L5/S1 but I am going ahead with 2nd shot on Friday since still recovering from 4 level cervical surgery. I to have pain down right side and taking 2400 of gabapentin . Hopefully by delaying I am not damaging any more nerves. I hope you get relief soon.
