ACDF C5-C7 Swallowing Issues after 6 months

Hi Everyone,

Seems all I have read on this forum and others that the swallowing problems occur shortly after surgery.

I was perfect after both surgeries 7/2001 C6-C7 and 1/2013 C5-C6

The problem started in July 2013 i started chocking on solid food and pills and pain on the right side of my throat.

Have been on pureed and liquids for a month now!

Surgeon said X rays looked good all screws and plate were in place.
Problem got worse at a fast pace!
Have had (2) ENT Scopes nothing noted
(2) GI Endoscopy the second found it hard to get the scope down and stretched the sphincter muscle, but felt there was something pushing from behind the esophagus.
(3) barium swallow tests one just liquid that showed nothing in Aug. and two food coated the second in Sept. showed a narrowing of the throat from something growing on the plate of the ACDF!
(1) CAT Scan

I am guessing it is scar tissue?? Going to see my surgeon this Friday, but I am a little nervous of the out come and i need some educated questions for him! Like can the plate be removed at this point and what should I be looking for?
Thank you

I'm sorry for what you are going through. If I were you, I would read in the neck pain forums under the pain tab on the left hand side of the page- and also the neck and back surgery forums under the treatment tab also found on the left hand side of the page. I'm sure that you will get lots of help from members who have had your surgery. You can also do a search on spine health for the problems you are having and you will find tons of information. BMP was not used in your neck was it?
  • I'm 5 weeks post surgery and starting to feel better but my throat is tight and I am having issues swallowing foods like bread or fish and they will get stuck in my throat and it feels extremely uncomfortable so I am sticking to yogurt, pudding, lettuce, etc ...anything that I know will slide down. The most uncomfortable part is it feels like someone is choking me...my throat is being pressed on hard...I went back to my surgeon today who said the x-ray looks fine and that it is not the hardware or the metal plate. He suggested a CT Scan to figure it out but my deductible is so high I declined this hoping it is swelling or scar tissue that will flatten out with time...I really hope more people who have had this scenario can post that this actually DOES go away as its very uncomfortable and I'm trying to avoid a CT Scan. It's comforting to know there are others out there with the same issue but what do we do about it??? I guess just wait it out? I'm praying this feeling goes away...thanks and best of luck to all you ACDF'ers!!!
  • because there are lots of members who have undergone surgery in the cervical area who can share their experiences with you concerning the problems with swallowing..
I hope that time brings you both relief......and that the uncomfortable feeling goes away quickly.
