I just want to introduce myself and say Hi to everyone, I am Kirsty and I have been dealing with chronic lumber pain and nerve pain in both legs and feet since late 2008. I have a central prolapsed disc at L1- L2, severe facet hypertrophic joints in the lumber spine with a narrowing of the lateral recesses causing nerve compression. I also suffer from osteoarthritis in several joints.

  • Hi Kristy. Welcome to our world but I'm sorry you have to be here :-/ You are going to find so much information here!! What kinds of treatment are you getting? That all sounds very painful.
  • Hi Taren, thanks so much for your reply, the information on this site is sure helpful and I realise that I am not alone. I have tried Gabapentin and this did help however I had a reaction to it, currently taking amitriptyline, anti-inflamatories and paracetamol. I have signed up for a pain management group where they will look at medication, but won't begin this until early next year.

  • Thanks so much for the welcome, so glad to join. I have read through the tips for newbies and forum rules so hope I don't make any more mistakes (my first post MRI advice "sorry"). The site is sure a great resource for anyone living with chronic pain and everyone seems so supportive.
  • Hi. I'm glad you found the site. I had trouble with Gabapentin. Once I got to a certain level the side effects were too much, and hadn't gotten to a level that it helped. Lyrica is another med. which you could ask your doctor about. It helps me more than Gabapentin. With the osteoarthritis, are you seeing a rheumatologist or what kind of docs?
    4 level ACDF C4-C7 5-2-11, laminectomy & discectomy L4-L5 1/26/12, ALIF L4-5, L5-S1 12/10/12.
  • Thanks so much for your reply, this is a great site. My GP was willing to prescribe Lyrica however I was on this in 2008 but I also had an intolerance to it. I haven't been referred to anyone for the osteoarthritis, GP explained that the large bone growths and misshapen fingers are as a result of osteoarthritis and I have wear and tear in most joints. I am only seeing my GP at present and am referred for pain management.

    welcome to the site.
I have severe OA that I have been dealing with for several years. Have your GP refer you to a good rheumatologist for your arthritis symptoms. There is also a sister site here for people with arthritis, check it out, lots of good information.
I did a stint with Gabapentin to control nerve pain and it affected my short term memory and made it difficult to concentrate at work so I quit taking it a few years back.
Keep us posted, hopefully you will find the support you need here.
  • Thanks for this Ranger, I think with all the health service cutbacks here the doctor's seem reluctant to refer to specialists. I feel my osteoarthritis is well managed at present with medication, just not managing the nerve pain so well. Hoping it's just a flare up that will settle down again.
