And my opinion only, I'd try as many different treatments as possible before going to pain killers. I'd try a different nerve medicine along with PT. Sometimes combinations work even when they don't work individually. Best of luck to you.

  • Try a different medication specifically for nerve pain. Talk to your Doctor about what problems you are having and what goals you are looking for. Narcotic pain killers like codeine can cause really bad constipation, become less effective over a long period of time, and at the very least can cause really bad constipation. They also work in a completely different way, and may not even touch nerve pain. Best to consult a professional before you make your decision about what to take.

  • I have found that when I have a flare up of sciatica that taking Advil actually helps. Anti inflammatory medication can help the root cause of sciatica by reducing inflammation that may be pushing on your sciatic nerve.

Most narcotic pain medication won't touch sciatica since it is nerve pain. Most folks have already touched on that part though. When you see your doctor next time I'd suggest you tell him how the medication your taking makes you feel and ask him/her what they think is best. If you go in asking for pain killers, it will cause a red flag to go up.

Perhaps Lyrica or Topamax might work? Sciatica is frustrating because it can last for a while and just make life miserable until it calms down. I hope they find a medication for you that is effective!
