Anterior Cervical Disc Surgery

Good afternoon!
I am 27 years old and other than my current condition in good health. I exercised regularly, ate healthy usually and am a active athlete. I was in an auto accident about a year ago. (It was bad I was going 45 mph and a car tried to cross traffic. My frame of my car was bent in 3 places and airbags were defective). I went to the hospital they did a ct scan and dismissed me. I was sent to a Neurosurgeon who did an MRI of my neck. My MRI came back with a mild herniated disk at c5-c6 and moderate herniated disk at C6-C7. I am having arm pain, tingling, loss of feeling in both arms. I have severe neck pain and loss of motion. Ever since the accident I have had 2 constant migraines, one in the forehead that pulsates and one above my neck in the back of the head. I get dizzy, run a slight fever, turn pale or bright red. My voice gets hoarse, I have terrible muscle spasms to the point I wake my sleeping husband and unfortunately many other symptoms. I have been immobalized with a hard collar and a soft collar. I have been dismissed from Physical Therapy twice due to the pain level. I have tried several different variations of medications. I have tried Chiropractors, Kinselogists, Chiropractors that work specifically with the neck and CranioSacral Therapy (working with my spinal fluid). I have also received injections such as Epidurals, Trigger points, Cortisone shots, mixture shots to strenthen my ligaments and nerve blocks. Nothing has seemed to help. My Neurosurgeon suggested doing an anterior cervical disk fusion for c6-c7. He wants to use a bone from a bone bank (allograft). I do NOT accept blood under any circumstances, nor any of the major blood components. So I have what may seem like a silly question but would the bone that he would be using contain someone's blood or blood component? I have tried to research this many different ways but am not getting anywhere. PLEASE HELP!!!

  • Have you posed this question to your surgeon or his office?
  • I had an anterior fusion with donor bone at C 5-6 two years ago and it was the easiest orthopedic surgery that I have ever had.
I was told that they really pufify and sterilize the donor bone and there isno chance of getting any germs or disease from the graft.
I know it all sounds creepy but the old fashioned alternative is to take bone from your own hip and its painful and recovery from the hip procedure can be a long painful process
This is why donor cadivor bone is more commonly used these days.

Just sharing the info that my neurosurgeon gave me

    Hope it helps
  • My doctor used a synthetic material for my ACDF. I don't know if it was due to my need for bloodless surgery or his personal preference/practice. But you need to consult your surgeon with your concern about the bone used and if you are uncomfortable see if he will he use an alternative. That is your right as a patient. If he is not 100% cooperative and accomodating you might want to find another surgeon who is. If you have a liason be sure to use them as well to answer your question/concerns.
I'm sure your surgeon told you very little blood is lost during surgery so just follow the instructions as to what to avoid the week or so before surgery and you should be fine. Also if machines such as cell saver is agreeable to you make sure the hospital has one available just in case it should be needed. You want to be prepared for the unexpected.
If you want to contact me personally you can send me a private message. My surgery was 7 wks ago and everything went well. I am now weaning off of using the neck brace and starting to increase my activities. I am very glad I had the surgery and 90% of my symptoms are gone and this will help me have a better quality of life over time. I hope you have success with your Dr. and your surgery.
