How many hours per day should you wear back brace?

I'm 4 1/2 weeks post op from a single level fusion at l4-5. My Neurosurgeon doesn't "do" back braces, so I was never given any instructions for wearing one. However, while in the hospital, a guy from rehab came by and fitted me for one. I brought it home and wore it a few times, but I couldn't remember how he showed me how to fit it properly until today. I've worn it for about 6 hours now and I really don't want to take it off! Can I wear it to bed? Even though I'm almost 5 weeks out, do you think it's still doing any good?

I really wish I would have started wearing it earlier, but like I said, my Dr evidently doesn't put much stock in them for some reason.

  • For the first 3 months my surgeon wanted me to wear my brace whenever I wasn't laying down.

I'm 3 months post-op now and my surgeon still wants me to wear it for another 3 months, but only when I'm outside of the house.

  • Thanks Steve! The brace I'm wearing is only the flexible kind. Are you wearing the heavier type?

contact your doctor and talk about this brace.

If your doctor does not believe in back braces, but you were fitted with one at the hospital, something does not add up.
The therapist at the hospital works based on what the doctor states, the therapist can not just decide to fit you for a back brace. Those orders had to come from the doctor.
