Non mechanical fusion

G'day, about two years ago I had a microdiscectomy at level L5/S1. I now have another disc protrusion that is preventing me from holding down full time employment, among other things. My surgeon has suggested that this time he would remove the entire disc and let the vertebrae fuse naturally which he said could take 6-12 months, although I would be able to return to light duties after 6 weeks. He has recommended this procedure over a mechanical fusion due to my age (34) and general good heath.
I have been trying to find some additional information on this kind of natural fusion but have been unsuccessful so far. Anyone out there had this procedure done before and if so how did it go for you, any pain as the vertebrae rub on each other before the fusion takes?

Any feedback appreciated,

I've never heard of a non mechanical fusion. I'm 24 and had a 2 level fusion with hardware and bone grafts from my ribs 3 months ago done by one of the top spine surgeons in PA. Would your surgeon just be placing the bone grafts without any hardware holding them in place? I'm not sure I see the benefit in that because the hardware serves no purpose anyway once the bones fuse, it's just there to hold things in place.

Thanks for the reply Steve T, the surgeon didn't mention anything about bone grafting.

  • Thanks very much for the info, Liz.
  • I'm not sure how the fusion would occur then. The bone graft takes the place of the disc so the spine has proper alignment.
