Hello, I am new to this site and this is my first post. Just to give you a bit of my history, I am 29 years old with Degenerative Disc Disease starting at a very young age. My first back surgery (Discectomy) was in 2002. I've had "flair ups" of severe back pain over the years but back in July I started experiencing severe pain/numbness in my left hip, buttocks, and leg. My first MRI showed 3 mild/moderate disc bulges with some Foraminal Stenosis. I also had an EMG that showed nerve dysfunction/damage at S1. I tried oral steroids and pain meds which didn't help. Then I was referred to a PM Doc where I had 3 injections which still did not help. I was seen by both an orthopedic and neurosurgeon, neither thought surgery was the best option. I was started on Lyrica and physical therapy yet the pain persisted. I had a repeat MRI in December and it was worse. After 7 months of constant pain, I finally had surgery 3 weeks ago (neurosurgeon not orthopedic). I had levels L3-S1 worked on. Post surgery the hip pain was gone, however the buttocks and leg pain has worsened over the past few weeks. At my 2 week f/u he stated that the nerves were very irritated from being compressed for such an extended period of time. He said it should resolve within the next few months. I am still on Lyrica, Pain meds, and was started on diazepam for the spasms. I have not returned to work yet because I have a job that is very physically demanding. He also discussed needing a potential fusion in the future with how quickly my discs are degenerating and I've already had 2 surgeries. Also, my line of work could speed up the process unfortunately. Sorry for such a long post but the major question is, are there others that have experienced continued or worsening of nerve pain post back surgery? And did it eventually resolve? I know it's only been 3 weeks but I fear it may not improve. I also worry that returning to work will only make it worse. Thankfully I have at least a full 6 weeks (possibly 8) per doctors orders, before I have to go back. I know all cases are different but any input would help, thanks.
