I am 9 weeks post op Completely rebuilt and fused lumbar spine. Need to get off pain meds so I can drive. What about the rest of you. Pain and driving?

  • I drive but I'm only on mild pain meds (co-codamol). It doesn't sedate me at all anymore. I do get some pain going around bends and corners and getting out of the car, but it is necessary to get around.
  • Thank you for your response. My pain drugs do not sedate me but they are the strong ones, the two oxy's. I want to cut back gradually but can't wait to drive while I come off them.

  • Has your surgeon cleared you to drive yet? He can taper you off the oxycontin safely and pretty quickly depending on the dose that you were on.....usually, the dose is reduced every couple of days, until you are off it completely but it must be done under medical supervision, especially if you have been taking them for some time.
Talk to your surgeon /doctor about a tapering plan....believe me they will be happy to provide one.

I had a double mastectomy Jan 28 and I was driving with pain meds 2 weeks later. I'm on two pain killers. I have sevre back problems too. I usally take the less strong one. Which would be long lasting one. Because you will stilll have pain.
