Neck and Lumbar Chronic Pain for more than 20 yrs...

Hey all, I am new here. I appreciate all of the postings on here, I could spend years looking through all of them. I was diagnosed when I was 19 (I am 42 this year) with Degenerative Disc disease (they aren't sure whether it's from a Birth defect or an Injury as a small child) and from there my Lower back was first with the trouble and so I had a Discectomy/ Laminectomy at the L4/L5 L/S1 area in 08' and that surgery did not go well. The Surgeon took off 3 Transverse Processes on the Left side so I had some major issues going on because come to find out, he never did the actual surgery ( I was mad because he came highly recommended). He took off the 3 pcs and the MRI looked the same afterwards in 10'. So I then had a Lumbar Fusion in that same year of 10'. Since then I have major scar tissue problems and the pain is ridiculous also my neck started to go and now I have C1, C3 -C7 problem that is going down hill fast. I have issues with both arms and hands. I can no longer Drum and play Bass the way I used too and Life has always been difficult to say the least. Brothers and Sisters, I know some of what you're going through. I do not want to pretend to know your pain or situation but I have been in this for a while. I do not want another surgery because it just feels like none have worked out so far and I don't trust many people after all of the years of listening and doing what Dr's have said to do. Praise God I am able to work from home about 95% of the time and Dragon Naturally Speaking has helped quite a bit with typing on the PC. I have Numbness and tingling down my left leg and pain in that ankle (both since 2007), also I have Arthritis and carpal tunnel in my right hand and wrist and I where a Cervical collar most of the time so I don't do any more damage (or at least I hope not). I feel trapped but not alone thanks to all of you on here, I see there is a good support system and I hope I can help someone else because of what I have gone through and am still going through today.

I strongly advise you to quit doing that or you'll get in trouble. I xxxx up my neck exactly by wearing such a collar for too long. People have little to no idea on what damage these collars can do. Essentially you read that they "weaken muscles", well the entire skeletal system relies on muscles to sustain it. When they atrophy, there's more force on the articulations (intervertebral discs) they degenerate silently. By the time you feel you have a problem it's usually too late and the disk has been damaged.

Immobilization is deadly for the spine, you should try keeping it moving and maintain muscle tone.

  • Hi Pain8me
Wow you are so so young to handle so much in your life. Everytime I read or hear of someone your age that has been so
strong to deal with those kind of health issues it makes me get off my pity trip. I have only had serious pain and issues for 13 years and I am now 65 so I feel very lucky I was not hurt or ill young. Do you realize how strong you are to be working, seeking out new ideas to help you and going on. You should be proud of yourself big time.
I have already found so much infor. and met so many wonderful people here, it is a great support to the life we lead.
I agree with Michael B about the muscles I am at 65 in big trouble for getting so out of shape. It is hard when pain is even worse, I quit making the effort which was a huge mistake. Our issues are so different I had not even thought about the neck muscles they are critical to support.
Anyway if there is anything I can do if you need someone to talk to I am here.
    Take care of yourself.
  • I appreciate your comments, life has been... interesting shall we say. It is nice to have support. I am here for you and everyone else that's here as well. I'm not on here too often but I am learning to try and use instruments like this to help me process the life we lead.
Thanks again Hope3, I'm sure that I will see you around.
    God bless,
