Possible L2 failure

edited 03/04/2014 - 8:29 AM in Chronic Pain
Hi, I am new here and I am feeling really hopeless. I had a fusion with hardware in 2012. S1-L3. Then had a revision surgery because there was loose hardware and it was not fusing right after a year. The new surgery with hardware fused right, and the hardware is in place. I had my year checkup today and have been having extreme pain in my right hip - right leg when I walk and move around. The PA-C today said she thinks I have a pinched nerve at L2 now (GREAT)!!!!!.

So now they want to do a CT scan, and start the process over again. I was laid off, and my wife can't find a job so I don't have insurance. It would be over 2000.00 for a scan. The OTC meds don't work, and of course NO-one will give me anything strong. I mean they did offer to refer me to pain management AGAIN, but again..... too expensive. I'm wondering what people can do with natural herbs, or legal meds that I can get in the USA, or elsewhere and ship to the USA? To be clear I am referring to non-controlled meds. There are herbs and other things available in other countries that are not controlled here in the US. I am just looking for any info on ones that work. Thanks

Any help would be great. ES

    There are low cost hospital resources to get the imaging studies done that they want you to do, and most hospitals will allow you to make payment arrangements or provide the services for free if you can not afford to pay. Most hospitals also have clinics associated with them with sliding scales for patients with no insurance or little insurance. With the new healthcare laws, subsidized healthcare is also available for people with no insurance, so there are options available for you to get the care you need, you just need to look into them in your area.
    As far as getting medications through other sources, it is an extremely unwise and illegal move to attempt in the US. If your state allows the use of medical marijuana, you will still need a doctor to provide the medical certification in order to qualify for that remedy, although there are little in the way of studies currently available about it's use.
  • Thank you for the information, and I'll look into this. To be clear I am referring to non-controlled meds. There are herbs and other things available in other countries that are not controlled here in the US. I am just looking for any info on ones that work. Thanks
  • Once again we are reminded of the benefits of the Health Service in the United Kingdom. I tremble to think what the bill could be for all the MRI's, X-rays, consultations and medications not to mention the surgery some of us have had.
    How our friends in the US and Canada cope with the expense and worry of insurance limitations or even absence of insurance as well as dealing with the pain, difficulties and expense of worsening disability I really cannot imagine.
    It is nothing short of wonderful that this site exists to provide encouragement, support and expert information to help all of us, regardless of nationality, to deal with what life sometimes dishes out.
    Best wishes to all;
  • John, thanks for the reply. Yes the USA is substandard with care. No insurance and no job, everything is out of pocket. There are county and other programs to pay on a sliding scale, but they need all of my financial records, and have to review and approve it which can take months.

    When all this first started I tried some of the 'natural' remedies for arthritis & nerve pain in England & USA. To be honest nothing worked much. The nerve mixes are mostly magnesium anyway..do you take supplements? I now take magnesium, B complex, etc. Have you tried the aromatherapy oils? I never thought that would be my thing but it does help a little. I have the blends you rub right on & a little oil heater.
    Did your physical therapist show you gentle stretches? You could try those with heat. I can usually reduce my pain a little by combining the oils with heat & stretches..please don't over do it! ;-)
    I noticed a used TENS machine for sale on Craig's List once or maybe you know someone who has one you could borrow.

    I'm so sorry. You're in a horrible situation. I never truly appreciated the National Health Service until I experienced the alternative first hand! Do you have a good relationship with your family doctor? I know mine has patients without insurance & he does everything he can to care for them. It could be worth having a long, honest conversation with yours. I wish I could be of more help.

    Best Wishes.
