Facet joint pain/posterior synovial cysts ... but no disc problems

I've recently been diagnosed with mechanical back pain. I have two posterior synovial cysts that are (likely) putting a lot of pressure on the medial root, giving me axial pain with no radiculopathy. My discs are apparently in really really great shape though.

Unfortunately, I don't think there's any long term solutions for this other than L5-S1 fusion. I'm going to get the root nerve block and then the rhyzotomy to placate the insurance company, but 2/3 docs I've seen said the only solution to stop the mechanical pain is the fusion. (The other doc said I should just come in for injections and take pain meds as the conservative care solution.)

I'm 34, fairly active (wakeboarding, snowboarding, running, weight lifting, rowing), and this seems like a pretty atypical problem both for someone like me and just in general. Is there anyone else out there who is treating/has treated mechanical back pain? I would really like to hear from someone who has had a fusion without a laminectomy or discectomy, but if you've got any experience with this I'd love to hear about it.
